Beethoven focus of JPO summer season

Eight of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies will be performed as part of the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra’s summer season, which kicks off at the Teatro Degollado on June 9.

The opening program serves up a tasty dish featuring mega-works by the “Three Great ‘B’s’” – Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.

The evening will start with Marco Parisotto conducting Johann Sebastian Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582), arranged by Ottorino Respighi, followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21,  with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 as the finale.

The first pair of concerts of the summer season are scheduled Thursday, June 9, 8:30 p.m. and Sunday, June 12. 12:30 p.m. Tickets cost from 110 to 200 pesos.

After a weekend off, Parisotto conducts two more renowned Beethoven works on June 23 and 26: Symphony No. 2 in D major (Op. 36)  and Symphony No.3 in E flat Major Op.55 ”Eroica.”

The third program on June 30 and July 3 sees guest director Günter Neuhold of Austria take the baton to lead the musicians in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60 and Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.  Sandwiched between the two works will be a performance of Armando Luna’s Sinfonía núm. 2, Homenaje a Posada.

Joining guest U.S. conductor Dorian Wilson on July 7 and 10 will be pianists Christine Gerwig and Efrain Gonzalez Ruano.  They will interpret Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, again sandwiched between two Beethoven concertos: his sixth and eighth.

Another pianist, Daniil Kharitonov from Russia, joins JPO director Parisotto for the season finale on July 14 and 17.  Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 will conclude the concert, following three more of the German master’s works: Egmont, Op. 84; Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat (“Emperor”) and Coriolan Overture Op. 62.
