Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. 

On June 14: Recital by Ópera Joven de Guadalajara, comprising Gustavo Allfadir (barítone), Florencia Nepote (soprano), José Alonso Pérez (tenor), Ciria Dorantes (mezzo-soprano) – accompanied by Javier Morales (piano). They will interpret classics by Verdi, Mozart, Puccini, Donizetti and others. The second half of the concert is dedicated to Mexican favorites, such as “Granada” by Agustín Lara, “Júrame” by María Grever and “Bésame mucho” by Consuelo Velázquez. June 21: Pianist Lourdes Santiago and Manuel Delaflor in concert, with the second half featuring a “four-hands” demonstration.  June 28: Recital by Pedro Velázquez Cardoso (flute) and José Guadalupe López Luévano (guitar).

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Summer season kicks off with the “Three Great ‘B’s’” – Bach, Beethoven and Brahms.Marco Parisotto conducts Bach’s Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor (BWV 582), arranged by Ottorino Respighi, followed by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 in C major, Op. 21,  with Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 68 as the finale.

US student choir

The 80-year-old Palo Alto High School Choir, directed by Michael Najar,  will present a concert as part of its current tour of Mexico.

Lutoslawski Quartet

Polish quartet founded in 2007 has appeared at many music festivals around the world, including Berlin, Brussels, Ankara and Ghent. Their repertoire includes classical music, as well as recently commissioned pieces, and focuses on popularizing Polish music.

4th Classic Rock Festival

Three bands – DOF, Midnight Special and Prófugos – pay tribute to three rock music legends: The Doors, Creedence Clearwater Revival and Gustavo Cerati, the Argentine performer who died in 2014 at the age of 55.

Parisotto conducts two more renowned Beethoven works: Symphony No. 2 in D major (Op. 36)  and Symphony No.3 in E flat Major Op.55 ”Eroica.”

Mariachi

Mariachi Vargas, arguably  the most successful mariachi band of the genre, give a concert in homage to their late artistic director, People Martinez. Also featuring singers Azucena and Dina Buendía.

Culture Club

British band led by Boy George reached heights in the 1980s, but still going strong despite several break ups. Known for hits “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” and “Karma Chameleon.”

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

The third program of the summer season sees guest director Günter Neuhold of Austria take the baton to lead the musicians in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 in B-flat major, Op. 60 and Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67.  Sandwiched between the two works will be a performance of Armando Luna’s Sinfonía núm. 2, Homenaje a Posada.

Joining guest U.S. conductor Dorian Wilson are pianists Christine Gerwig and Efrain Gonzalez Ruano.  They will interpret Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu’s Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, sandwiched between two Beethoven concertos: his sixth and eighth

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara in conjunction with Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents the Greg Gisbert Quartet. Gisbert, one of the leading trumpeters in the international jazz scene, performs frequently with Buddy Rich, Woody Herman, Gary Burton, the Mingus Epitaph and others.

Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra

Russian pianist Daniil Kharitonov joins JPO director Parisotto for the summer season finale.  Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 will conclude the concert, following three more of the German master’s works: Egmont, Op. 84; Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat (“Emperor”) and Coriolan Overture Op. 62.

GR RECOMMENDS: Obara International Quartet

Polish saxophonist and composer Maciej Obara burst on to the international jazz scene after winning the Bielska Zadymka Jazz Contest in 2006 for his album “Message from Oyaho.” His International Quartet features Polish countryman Dominik Wania on piano, alongside two of Norway’s most in-demand jazz players, bassist Ole Morten Vagan and drummer Gard Nilssen.
