Traditional Mariachis to take the stage

This year’s 15th Traditional Mariachi Festival runs from August 15 to 21 and will feature seven free concerts at the Degollado Theater.

Special homages will be paid this year to famed Mexican singer and “Golden Era” movie actor Pedro Infante, as well as the emblematic mariachi tune, “Son de la negra.”

The Encuentro Nacional de Mariachi Tradicional is a showcase for the earliest form of the genre, in which bands do not use brass instruments, sticking with guitars, violins and harps, or some other mix of string instruments.  Musicians often wear loose-fitting white peasant shirts, usually with black or white pants and huarache sandals.

Concerts at the Degollado are scheduled on the following days:

Monday, August 15, 8 p.m. Opening  concert.

Tuesday, August 16, 8 p.m. Homage to Pedro Infante.

Thursday, August 18, 8 p.m.  Jose Lira: Soy Mariachi.

Friday, August 19, 7 p.m. Homage to “Son de la Negra.”

Saturday, August 20, 10 a.m. Traditional Mariachi Gala.

Saturday, August 20, 7 p.m. Musicians of Mexico.

Sunday, August 21, 10 a.m.  Closing gala, featuring award winners.

Free complimentary tickets for the concerts may be obtained at the Secretaría de Cultura de Jalisco building in the city center, at Reforma 425, between Zaragoza and Santa Mónica, on Friday, August 12 (for shows on August 15 and 16); Monday, August 15 (for shows on August 18 and 19) and Tuesday, August 16 (for shows on August 20 and 21), between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

A stage will be erected  in the Plaza Fundadores behind the Degollado for free performances by mariachi bands each day between 3 and 6 p.m.

The exhibition “100 years of Pedro Infante” is open in the foyer of the Degollado each day of the festival between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.
