Mariachi fiesta ready for blast off

The Guadalajara International Mariachi Festival gets into full swing this weekend with a host of familiar activities. Here’s a run-down of what’s on offer over the next ten days.

Performances in the Cultural Pavilion in the Plaza Liberation: daily Friday, August 26 through Friday, September 2 at 4, 5:15 and 6 :30 p.m. (except Sunday, August 28).

Gran Plaza: Aug. 26, 27, 28, Sept. 2, 3, 4, 5:30 p.m.

Andares: Aug. 26, 27, 28, Sept. 1, 2, 3, 4, 6 p.m.

Mariachi masses: Guadalajara Cathedral Sunday, August 28, noon; Basilica de Zapopan Sunday, September 4, noon

Opening parade: Avenida Chapultepec, Sunday, August 28, 10 a.m.

Gala Publica: Plaza Liberacion, Sunday, August 28, 6:30 p.m.

Verbena Popular: Glorieta Chapalita, Friday, September 2, 6:30 p.m.

Closing concert: Plaza Juan Pablo II (facing the Zapopan Basilica) Sunday, September 4, 7 p.m.

National Charro Championship: Lienzo Charro Nito Aceves (Paseo de Cajititlán, Tlajomulco de Zúñiga) Thursday, Sept. 1, and Friday, Sept. 2, 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, noon and Sunday, Sept. 4, noon and 4 p.m. (finals day).
