Tuesday recitals

The Martes de Música y Ópera series sponsored by the Jalisco Culture Department attracts some truly stellar classical performers and it’s all free!  Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.

August 30: Cuarteto Nima, all-female string quartet (above).  September 13: Tlalipac chamber orchestra with soprano Natalia Ramos, including well-known pieces by Puccini and Rossini.  September 20: Recital by pianist Patricia Garcia-Torres. Schubert, Zyman, Debussy, Arturo Márquez and others. September 27: Jalisco Canta, with Joycee Díaz, soprano; Alejandro Vigo, piano. Works by Haendel, Beethoven, Mozart, Bizet, Gershwin and others.

Thursday Dance

Free presentations by contemporary dance groups. September 15: Grupo Folclórico “Tierra y Libertad.” September 22: Ballet Folklorico Quaquibini. September 29: Ballet Folclórico de la sección 16 del SNTE.

Mariachi galas

As in past years, the International Mariachi Festival stages nightly galas featuring some of the country’s top mariachi bands: Vargas de Tecalitlán, Nuevo Tecalitlán, Sol de América and América de Don Jesús Rodríguez de Hijar. Accompanied by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra, these evenings, while expensive, are emotional experiences and full of color.

Sin Bandera 

Popular Latino pop duo is made up of Mexico’s Leonel García and Argentinean Noel Schajris.

Jazz concert

The New York Jazz All Stars series, sponsored by the Universidad de Guadalajara and Jazz at Lincoln Center, presents Marcus Printup Quintet.

Alejandro Fernandez

Ranchero singer and heartthrob is the son of legendary crooner Vicente Fernandez, but is fast becoming as popular as his “old man.”

Garbage

Concert by hugely successful U.S.-Scottish alternative rock band, formed in 1993 in Madison, Wisconsin.

Homage to Consuelo Velázquez

Various artists will be on stage to remember the work of Consuelo Velázquez, the famed Mexican concert pianist, songwriter and recording artist who died in 2005 at the age of 88.

Ballet de Jalisco 

The state’s only full-time professional dance troupe presents “Don Quijote,” based on the famous work by Miguel de Cervantes.

Glenn Miller Orchestra

Turn back the clock to hear swing dance melodies from yesteryear.  The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all over the world.

Stomp
