Aphrodite’s ‘judgment’ thrills Tapatios

Around 20,000 spectators packed the Plaza de la Liberation to see the multimedia/acrobatic spectacle “Afrodita y el juicio de París” performed by Catalan company La Fura dels Baus, with the help of 100 local extras.

The piece opened the Guadalajara municipality’s ”Sucede”  Festival, featuring nearly 800 artistic performances and events spread over eight weeks in various venues.

The spectacle told the story of The Judgement of Paris, a story from Greek mythology in which the goddesses Hera, Athena and Aphrodite ask Zeus to judge which of them was fairest. The elaborate 55-minute show received a huge ovation.

In a five-minute address, Guadalajara Mayor Enrique Alfaro lauded his administration for taking the lead in Mexico for investing in culture, noting that the Sucede Festival was the second largest of its kind ever staged in the country.
