Photo contest puts focus on Chapala’s cultural landscape

Shutterbugs with a knack for capturing local scenery have a shot at winning an enticing prize package and statewide exposure of their talents in a photography contest promoted by the Chapala government’s office of culture.

The competition is now open to amateur and professional photographers residing in the municipality who may submit a single original photograph depicting any one of the following themes: Art, Crafts and Trades; Streets, Mansions and Churches; or Festivities, Traditions and Customs.  
Submission requirements

- Each entry-one only per person-must be an unpublished image, in color or black and white, submitted in high quality digital format.

- No “photoshopping” enhancements or special effects are allowed. Minor cropping is permitted.

- Save in JPG file, labeled with the title of photo and author’s name (example: Pescador – John Doe).

- Accompany entry with a Word file containing following information: Lugar (place where photograph taken); Nombre del Autor (photographer’s name or pseudonym); Domicilio (home address); Teléfono (phone number); Ocupación (occupation); Edad (age).

Submission of the entry implies the author’s consent for organizers to use the image for promotional and exhibition purposes, without effecting copyrights.

Methodology

All entries complying with the above rules will be uploaded to the municipal government’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/GobiernoMunicipaldeChapala) on October 10, to be viewed by the public through October 20.

Social network users may vote their preferences between those dates by clicking “like” on their favorite pictures.  The 20 photos receiving the highest numbers of “like” hits qualify for the next round of the competition. Those will be rated by a panel of judges with expertise in photography and local culture, based on criteria of originality, composition, narrative quality and technique.

Awards

The top 20 selections will be printed to comprise an itinerant photo exhibition that will tour different localities throughout the state. Winners will be announced at the exhibit opening, to be held Wednesday, October 29 at Chapala City Hall.

First place prize: 3,000 pesos cash, plus a Descubre Chapala (*see below) tour package valued at 1,600 pesos. Second place prize: 2,000 pesos cash. Third place prize: 1,000 pesos cash.

The best three shots will also be published as cover shots for the local Spanish weekly Página.
