Dancers dazzle audience in show dramatizing Aztec legends

Ballet Folklórico Son de Mexico delighted an appreciative audience with the November 22 debut of Chicomotzoc, an eye-popping dance spectacle based on legends of the origin and migration of the Aztec tribes.

The troupe of 21 lakeside area dancers performed with energy and finesse throughout a 45-minute routine that stood out not only for its outstanding choreography, but also the flashy costuming, dramatic lighting effects and heart-throbbing musical themes.

The presentation encompassed nine scenic episodes that showcased the creative talents of the group’s artistic director Luis Guzmán and original compositions by ethnomusicologist Ernesto Cano Lomelí. Guzmán was awarded a grant from Jalisco’s Ministry of Culture program to support the program’s design, development and staging.
