Train Station festivities rumble to end of the track

A series of cultural events at the Centro Cultural González Gallo to mark the 95th anniversary of the inauguration of the Chapala-Guadalajara railway line will continue through next weekend.

The birthday of the stately railroad station building that now houses the local cultural center was celebrated on Wednesday, April 8 with a concert by the Orquesta Típica de Chapala and one-day model train exhibition presented by the Club Amigos del Ferrocarril Guadalajara that featured a miniature model of the Chapala railroad station as it appeared in 1920. 

The schedule of special events for the coming week includes: 

Tuesday, April 14, 7 p.m., a concert by Guadalajara’s Rondalla Voces del Alma.

Wednesday, April 15, 7 p.m., the conference “Historia de la Estacion,” presented in Spanish by Zaida Cristina Reynoso Camacho, director of Chapala’s Historical Archives.

Friday, April 17, 7 p.m., performances by the Orquesta Tipica and Ballet Folklorico of Ixtlahuacan de los Membrillos. 

Saturday, April 18, 6 p.m., a concert by Chapala’s Redes y Cantos Chorus. 

The four-week program of festivities also included the March 26 opening of the center’s newly refurbished permanent gallery on Chapala’s railroad history and a temporary exhibit of photographs depicting Mexico railway travel loaned from the Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos in Puebla. 

Carlos Alvarez de la Peña, president of Amigos del Ferrocarril Guadalajara, announced that the club will be back at the the cultural center from August 7-9 to host a national convention of model train enthusiasts.
