Ajijic's Jewish Film Festival enters eighth year

This weekend marks the first screening of the eighth Annual Ajijic Jewish Film Festival, presented by the Lake Chapala Jewish Congregation.

The festival will feature a film on each of the nine Sundays in January and February at Cinemas del Lago in Plaza Bugambilias.

The festival begins Sunday, January 8 with a 1:30 p.m. showing of “Remember” (2015, Canada/Germany), an award-winning thriller, with stellar performances by acting greats Christopher Plummer and Martin Landau. The film follows a dementia-stricken Holocaust survivor on his own war criminal hunt.

The second film in the series, the comedy/drama “Dough” (2015, United Kingdom), revolves around an elderly Jewish baker who struggles to keep his business afloat until his young Muslim apprentice drops cannabis in the dough and sends sales sky high.

“Defiance” (2008, United States) on January 22 tells the story of Jewish brothers in Nazi-occupied Eastern Europe who escape into the Belarussian forests, where they join Russian resistance fighters and endeavor to build a village in order to protect themselves and about 1,000 Jewish non-combatants.

All the films begin at 1:30 p.m., except “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961 United States) on January 29, which starts at 11:30 a.m. and has one intermission due to its three-hour length.

The rest of the program  is as follows: “Baba Joon” (2015, Israel) February 5; “A Stranger Among Us” (1992, United States) February 12; “Bottle in the Gaza Sea” (2011, France/Canada/Israel) February 19; “My Mexican Shivah” (2007, Mexico) February 26.

Tickets are 60 pesos, available at the cinema. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Mision San Pablo, an orphanage for medically challenged children.
