Bus trips

Starting October 2, Viva la Musica is resuming its popular bus trips to Guadalajara to see concerts in the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra fall season, as well as view the spectacular Live from the Met opera simulcasts that are broadcast to more than 2,000 theaters around the world.

Reservations are confirmed when payment is made at the Lake Chapala Society on Thursdays or Fridays between 10 a.m. and noon. All buses will leave Ajijic from east of Farmacia Guadalajara. 

Trips are scheduled to see three Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra performances at the Teatro Degollado during October. The dates are:

- Friday, October 2, bus departs 4:30 p.m.

- Sunday, October 11, bus departs 10:30 a.m.

- Friday, October 16, bus departs 4:30 p.m.

The concert on October 2 features Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D Minor.  Works by Tchaikovsky and Chopin will be performed on October 11 and by Bartok, Grofe, Schuman and Moncayo on October 16. Viva la Musica has planned three trips to Live from the Met simulcasts at the Teatro Diana in October. The works are all-time favorites that are bound to delight opera buffs. 

- World renowned soprano Anna Netrebko plays Leonora in “Il Trovatore” on Saturday, October 3 (the Met is putting on this opera for the 615th time). The bus leaves Ajijic at 10:30 a.m.

- Tenor Aleksandr Antonenko takes the title role in Verdi’s “Otello” on Saturday, October 17.  Again the bus leaves at 10:30 a.m.

- Johan Botha plays the title role and soprano Eva-Maria Westbroek is Elisabeth in Wagner’s “Tannhauser” on Saturday, October 31.  Note that the bus leaves at 8:30 a.m. for this performance.

Naked Stage

The September reading of the Naked Stage Theater is the classic “An Inspector Calls” by J. B. Priestley and directed by Michael Warren.

 The cast includes Doug Pinkerton, Rosann Balbontin, Geoff Long, Kevin Leach, Florette Schnelle and Al Kirkland. 

The dates are Friday, September 25; Saturday, September 26 and Sunday, September 27. Opener at LLT

“Murder By Misadventure,” the first production of Lakeside Little Theatre’s 51st season, opens Friday, October 2 and runs through Sunday, October 11. The first Saturday performance and both Sundays will feature 3 p.m. matinees. All other performances will be evening shows with the curtain at 7:30 p.m. 

Tickets will be on sale daily (except Sundays) at the LLT box office from 10 a.m. until noon, beginning on Wednesday, September 30. 

Directed by Debra Bowers, “Murder By Misadventure” is a mystery thriller by Edward Taylor. The five-member cast includes Ed Tasca, Ken Yakiwchuk, Kathleen Morris and Michael Warren. 

Ajijic Cultural Center

Six evenings of free theater, cultural, literature, dance and musical events have been planned to celebrate the opening of the Centro Cultural Ajijic’s new museum and theater (Teatro Del Pueblo).

Pottery at ASA

Former art professor and award-winning sculptor Joe Smith will talk about his craft and discuss the process of Raku on natural lakeside clays at the Monday, October 5, 10 a.m. meeting of the Ajijic Society of the Arts (ASA) at La Bodega Restaurant.  

Smith has traveled extensively throughout the world learning various primitive and modern pottery techniques, particularly while living and working in Honduras, Nicaragua, the Dominican Republic, Haiti and Mexico. Several of his pieces have been influenced by the stories his wife, Jenny, recorded from her experiences as an humanitarian aid worker. His work is displayed in museums and private collections around the globe. 

Smith also teaches Raku and Primitive Pottery workshops for adults at Adobe Studio in Riberas del Pilar.
