Singing contest
La Bodega Ajijic restaurant continues with its International Singing Contest 2016 to benefit local charities.
Qualifying rounds are held each Thursday, 6:30 p.m. and run through October 20. The grand finale is on October 27. Each night benefits a different charity. Six judges grade participants on voice quality, presentation and diction using a ten-point scale. The three highest scoring competitors from each round are entered into the grand finale.

Ar show
Ajijic Society of the Arts officers Barbara Passarello, John McWilliams and Marcia Lavender congratulated José Durán (center) for earning the best of show ribbon in the annual themed show. See his red stallion wire sculpture and other works at ArtRageous (Ocampo 20), and Casa Lua (Ocampo 22), on exhibit through October 14.
JPO bus trips
Viva la Musica! is sponsoring bus trips from Lakeside to the Degollado Theater in Guadalajara to hear concerts by the Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra and see the Jalisco Ballet. The buses leave from just east of Farmacia Guadalajara in Ajijic on the Carretera.
Sunday, October 9: Respighi, Elgar cello concerto, Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. Sunday, November 6: Beethoven’s Leonora Overture, and Ninth Symphony. Bus departs 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 25: Live opera “Othello” with the Jalisco State Choir. Bus departs 4:30 p.m., with stop at a fine restaurant. Sunday, December 18: The Jalisco Ballet performs Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite (500 and 600 pesos). Bus departs at 10.30 a.m.

CREM fundraiser
Kazimierz and Jozef Olechowski will perform a concert of violin and piano at St. Andrews Anglican Church, Wednesday, October 12, 7 p.m. A portion of the proceeds will go to the CREM (Ajijic Music School) scholarhip fund. Tickets, 300 pesos, include wine and appetizers and are on sale at the Auditorio and Diane Pearl.
Free piano recitals
The Centro Cultural Gonzalez Gallo offers a series of piano recitals by musicians from the University of Guadalajara, beginning October 20, 7 p.m., and continuing every Thursday, through the first week of December. Admission is free.
LLT
Lakeside Little Theatre presents “Outside Mullingar,” an Irish love story by John Patrick Shanley and directed by Ann Swiston. Heartbreaking, funny and ultimately deeply moving, “Outside Mullingar” is a compassionate, delightful work about how it is never too late to take a chance on love.

Bravo Theatre
“Sylvia” by A.R. Gurney is planned for Bravo Theatre in early November. Directed by Roseann Wilshere, the play stars Paul Kloegman, Kathleen Carlson, Jayme Littlejohn, Tony Wilshere, Kathleen Morris and Arlene Pace.
The show opens Thursday, November 3 and will run Thursday to Sunday through November 13. Times: Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday and Sunday matinees at 4 p.m.

Public kids' art
Grupo Axixic Michicihualli is holding a competition for local children to create art that will appear on public street posts. Entry to the contest is free and painting materials will be provided. The winning prizes consist of trips to the Guadalajara Zoo, a Guadalajara museum visit, a trip to Mazamitla or to the Guachimontones ruins site. Three area schools are already confirmed as participants and the group will be visiting the participating schools next week to explain the project. This contest is ongoing through December.
