Motocross in the woods
Racepark Nabo on the northern edges of the Primavera Forest is celebrating its fifth anniversary with a Motocross race day, Saturday, August 23, from noon to 7 p.m.
Food, libations, fun and a natural atmosphere combine with the thrills and chills of motocross racing. About 100 competitors in all age groups will rev up their engines. The site is at Carretera a Nogales km 20 (take the return just after Venta de Astillero), about 20 minutes north of the Periferico. Parking costs 50 pesos. Enjoying the action is free.
'Canelo' has dish named for him
Tapatio boxing world champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez” (above) joins in 17th anniversary celebrations at Guadalajara’s popular Santo Coyote Restaurant, where he presented a new dish named for him, to be known as “Canelo Mar y Tierra.” Alvarez is one of 12 well-known local personalities lending their names to a dish to be sold as part of the eatery’s “Tapatios a la Carta” campaign. This charity program will see 20 percent of the proceeds from sales of each of the 12 “personalized” dishes donated to Televisa’s annal CRIT telethon program, which builds treatment centers for physically disadvantaged children throughout Mexico.
AMSOC Ice Cream Social
Kitchen wizards Lupita, Rosy and Diane (above) put out the first of many banana splits ordered up along with ice cream sundaes and root beer floats at last Thursday’s American Society (Amsoc) Ice Cream Social. A hefty crowd turned out for the hearty lentil soup, salad and grilled chicken lunch and followed it up with a delicious dessert. Amsoc’s next big event is the Mexican Independence Day bash on Saturday, September 13.
Santa Tere street party
After months of public works, the neighborhood of Santa Teresita is putting on a verbena popular (street party) to celebrate being open to the public again on Saturday, August 23, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Get hefty discounts on Mexican cuisine while enjoying live music in the area bounded by Manuel Acuña, Juan Alvarez, Andres Teran and Herrera y Cairo. Merchants in the area lost about 50 percent of their sales during street and sidewalk repairs and are offering discounts to entice shoppers back to the area. The streets running from the church to the public market will be closed to automobile traffic.
Pet Expo
Looking for a special gift for your pet or want to adopt a new friend? Saturday, August 23, Plaza Universidad (Patria and Pablo Neruda) will hold a pet expo that includes an auction, a show of pet tricks and agility, an obedience class and adoptions, plus sales of almost everything you need for that furry friend. The fun begins 11 a.m.
Special concert
An unusual concert is scheduled Wednesday, August 27, 8 p.m. at the Fundacion “Musik,” a beautiful old home in Guadalajara’s Centro Historico that has been converted into a music school. Mezzosoprano Kimball Wheeler will be singing compositions written specially for her by Peter Golub, William Hawley and Hilary Koprowski. She will be accompanied by virtuoso Spanish pianist Javier Vazquez Grela.
What makes this concert so special is the literature which inspired the composers: poems by T.S.Eliot, Christopher Marlowe, Emily Dickinson, Louise Bogan, Edna St.Vincent Millay, Claude Fredericks and Goethe, among others, all sung in the original language (translations provided).
The second half of the concert features works by Schubert, including some of his rarely performed songs, on topics ranging from a pet dwarf who murders his queen when she refuses his love, to the mystical ravings of a young nun.
