Presentation

Reporter columnist John Pint, and his wife Suzy, will present their new book,” Outdoors in Western Mexico 2,” at the Guadalajara Museum of Paleontology on Saturday, January 24, noon.

There will also be a Powerpoint with great pictures of the beautiful natural sites in the “Magic Circle” around Guadalajara. The presentation will be in both English and Spanish.

A special reduced entry fee of 10 pesos will apply for adults.

The Museo de Paleontología de Guadalajara was recently voted the second most  cultural site in the city after the Cabañas Institute.

The museum is at R. Michel 520, corner González Gallo, next to the Parque Agua Azul. Call 3619-5560 and 3619-7043 for more information.

Chivas under pressure

The Mexico professional soccer season, the Liga MX, got underway last weekend with mixed fortunes for the three Guadalajara teams.

Chivas were beaten 2-1 by Chiapas in their opening game, putting them in further danger of relegation – meaning they could be sent down from the top-flight league to a lower division. Despite being one of Mexico’s oldest and most successful teams, the Guadalajara side has struggled in recent years and will have to do better to avoid the drop – and the humiliation! While they certainly have the players to produce results, constant shifts in management have created instability at the club. After all, they have had 11 coaches since 2009 and three permanent ones in 2014 alone.

The University of Guadalajara’s Leones Negros got their campaign off to a great start, beating heavy favorites Monterrey 1-0. Atlas also started well, with a 1-0 victory against Tigres.

Bandstand

A pleasant way to spend the early evenings in downtown Guadalajara is to relax and enjoy the free serenades in the Plaza de Armas bandstand facing the Palacio de Gobierno.

The bands play for around an hour and are warmly appreciated by their audience.  Apart from the mariachi musicians on Wednesdays, the bands play a mixture of marches, waltzes, polkas, traditional Mexican songs and classical pieces.

The weekly schedule is as follows:

Tuesdays, 6:30 p.m. Guadalajara Municipal Band

Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. Orquesta Tipica de Guadalajara; 7:30 p.m. Mariachi serenades

Thursdays, 6:30 p.m. Jalisco State Band

Fridays, 6:30 p.m. Orquesta Tipica de Guadalajara

Sundays, 6:30 p.m. Jalisco State Band

American School

The American School Foundation of Guadalajara is hosting the fifth International Congress on Physical Education and Sports from Thursday, January 15 through Sunday, January 18  at its campus in Colonia Providencia.

The congress will welcome more than 300 participants from Argentina, Ecuador, Spain, Great Britain, Nicaragua, United States, Italy, Puerto Rico and Mexico.  For more information go to www.asfg.mx.

Batter up

Local baseball team Charros de Jalisco have taken the advantage in the semifinal series against Yaquis de Obregon after defeating them 4-2 in Obregon on Wednesday, January 14. This third leg victory makes it 2-1 to Charros over the series. The winning team needs four victories to make the final, so Charros will advance if they are able to win their next two games, played in Obregon on Thursday, January 14  (game had not begun at press time) and Sunday 18 January at 12.30 p.m. in Guadalajara.

If necessary, the team will play two more home games on Sunday, January 25 and Monday, January 26 at 7 p.m.. All games are shown on

TV channels TVCD and ESPN3.

Christmas Tree Collection

Tapatios wondering what to do with their now mostly bone-dry Christmas trees can bring them to one of three collection points established

in the city and exchange them for house plants. The initiative, developed by the Municipal Ministry of Ecology was a success in 2013, with more than 3,000 trees collected for compost, a target they hope to exceed in 2015. The collection points are installed in Bosque de los Colomos, Parque Alcalde and Parque Agua Azul.
