Folk dance

The famed Universidad de Guadalajara Ballet Folklorico troupe began its summer season at the Teatro Degollado Sunday morning. These stunning shows will take place at the theater  each Sunday through October 11.

This troupe’s repertoire takes in dances from the states of Veracruz, Michoacan, Guerrero and, of course, Jalisco, with its breathtaking “La Negra,” “La Culebra” and “Jarabe Tapatio” finales. Those who has never seen this pulsating and colorful show should not give it a miss. Repeat viewing is also recommended, as the program is updated each year. Value for money guaranteed!

Comic convention

COMICTLAN, Guadalajara’s answer to San Diego’s mammoth Comic-con convention, tales place at Expo Guadalajara on Saturday, August 1 and Sunday, August 2.

This multi-genre entertainment and comic convention features pop culture and entertainment elements across virtually all genres, including horror, animation, anime, manga, toys, collectible card games, video games, webcomics and fantasy novels.

A major feature of the convention is cosplay, in which participants dress up in costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea from manga and anime, comic books and cartoons, video games, or live-action films and television series.

General entry tickets cost 85 pesos, 80 pesos for students, and 70 pesos for children and cosplay participants. Doors open at 10 a.m. on each day, and close at 9 p.m.

Back to school

School is out for the summer but for those looking to get an early start on picking up supplies for the coming year, then the Vuelve al la Escuela show at Expo Guadalajara this weekend might be just the place to visit. 

Organized by the Guadalajara Chamber of Commerce, the expo features dozens of businesses and services for students, including backpacks, uniforms, utensils, digital equipment, footwear, books and art supplies, and options for study at all levels.  Many discounts will be offered at some 180 stands, organizers say.  Visitors will also be eligible for raffle prizes.

Open Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday, August 2, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.  Expo Guadalajara is at the corner of Lopez Mateos and Avenida de las Rosas. Parking is available.

Ginger Rogers

The the Ex Convento del Carmen’s Videosala highlights the films of Ginger Rogers in its 7th “Great Movie Stars” series this month. 

In her 62-year career, Rogers appeared in 72 films, including ten with dancer Fred Astaire. The August series, however focuses on Roger’s talents as an actress, particularly in the romantic comedy genre.

The classic movies are screened each Friday at 4, 6 and 8 p.m. General admission is 25 pesos, 15 pesos for teachers and students. The Ex Convento is located at Avenida Juarez 612, a block from Calzada Federalismo and the Parque Revolucion.

Handicrafters get-together

The general public is invited to the 18th Feria El Mundo de las Manualidades (Handicrafts Fair) from Thursday, August 6 to Saturday, August 8 at Expo Guadalajara.

With more than 100 exhibitors, including manufacturers, importers and suppliers of tools, materials and accessories for handicrafts, there will be a huge range of different techniques and skilled craftsmen and women on show.

As well as professional and amateur crafters, others attending the fair will include crafts and decoration store owners, craft promoters and distributors.

Classes for adults and workshops for children will be available.

Anyone with an interest in crafts, or a desire to learn new skills, should find the expo interesting. The Handicrafts Fair is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Cost of entry: 90 pesos per day, or 180 pesos for a three-day ticket. For more information go to www.tradex.mx/manualidades/guadalajara.
