Polo back in town this weekend

The Copa Moranza de Polo takes place Saturday and Sunday at the  Moranza Club de Polo in Tesistan, to the north of the Guadalajara metropolitan area.

Games involving some of Mexico’s top players are scheduled Saturday, October 24 and Sunday, October 25. Saturdays’s games start at 2, 3:30 and 5 p.m., and Sunday’s contests at 1, 2:30 and 4 p.m.

Played on horseback on a large field, the aim of polo is to score goals against an opposing team by driving a small white plastic or wooden ball into the opposing team’s goal using a long-handled mallet. The game consists of four to eight seven-minute “chukkas,” between or during which players change mounts. There are four players on each team.

This weekend’s event is sponsored by Porsche Guadalajara and 123 Tequila. A tequila tasting is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Saturday.

There is no charge to attend the polo event.  Everyone is welcome. There is a family atmosphere and plenty of food will be on sale, as well as vendor’s booths to browse.

The Moranza Club is located at Calle Libertad 1390, Colonia Los Alamitos, Tesistan.

Autumn bullfights begin Sunday

For those who are able to stomach the spectacle, bullfighting is back in town for the next five consecutive Sundays at the Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso.  The fall season welcomes some of the genre’s top matadors, starting on Sunday, October 25 with Daniel Luque, Juan Pablo Sanchez and Sergio Flores.  They will be taking on six bulls in front of an always excited crowd.

Despite a growing movement to ban the spectacle, bullfighting has a long tradition in Mexico and many fans in Guadalajara. There is no doubting the dedication of the matadors, who train long and hard to fine-tune their skills.

The corridas on October 25, November 1, 8, 15 and 22 all begin at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate and cost from 150 pesos (general) to 700 pesos for a front row seat.

Plaza de Toros Nuevo Progreso is at Montes Pirineos 1930 Colonia Monumental, across from the Estadio Jalisco on Calzada Independencia.
