American School Art Fest Saturday 

Don’t forget the 27th annual American School Art Fest takes place Saturday, November 7, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the American School, Colomos 2100, Colonia Providencia.

Forty-seven acclaimed artists will exhibit and sell their work in a leisurely atmosphere on the school soccer field under a large tent, while an array of international food and local entertainment line the field’s periphery. Free entry.

Discounts galore during Buen Fin

Dozens of businesses in the Guadalajara metro area will be offering discounts of between 10 to 50 percent throughout the fifth edition of El Buen Fin, Mexico’s equivalent to Black Friday, which takes place from Friday, November  13 to Monday, November 16 (a holiday marking the Mexican Revolution).

The first Buen Fin in 2011 generated 106 billion pesos of spending across Mexico, while 2012 and 2013 generated 150 and 160 billion pesos respectively.  Shoppers in 2014 were more savvy in their use of credit cards than in the past. Almost 60 percent of purchases under 4,000 pesos were in cash. Electronic items accounted for 37 percent of sales and clothes and footwear 36 percent.

Used book sale at city hall

Hundreds of used and antique books will be on sale in the in 6th Feria de Libro Usado y Antiguo to be held under the portals of the Presidencia Municipal in the Guadalajara city center from November 6 to 16. Vendors will set up their stalls on the sidewalks around city hall and welcome buyers from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.

American Chamber tourism confab 

In one of several events to mark its 50th anniversary, the American Chamber in Guadalajara is hosting the Jalisco Travel Fest conference aimed at all those involved in the tourism sector.  The two-day get-together will feature 12 specialist  speakers, time for networking and provide attendees with a wealth of information on the opportunities and potential of tourism in this state. The event is being held at the Hotel Presidente Intercontinental on Wednesday, November 11 and Thursday, November 12, The cost is 1,950 pesos before November 11. See amcham.com.mx for more details. The American Chamber Guadalajara holds its annual assembly and 50th gala dinner on Friday, November 13 at the Instituto Cultural Cabañas. A table for ten costs 20,000 pesos.

English lessons, free for one year

Do you know a Mexican citizen aged between 22 and 35 who is learning English who would jump at the chance of studying for a year without cost? Scholarships for free English study at the Mexican-American Cultural Institute in Guadalajara are currently being offered by the U.S. Consulate as part of the U.S. government’s 100,000 Strong in the Americas initiative. 

To qualify, applicants should download and fill the form at https://goo.gl/xkJWDY, and then write an essay in English (not more than 250 words) on the subject, “How studying would change your life?”
