Super Bowl party at the Minerva

Cable company Megacable will be setting up a large screen at the Minerva glorieta on Sunday, February 7 to show Super Bowl 50.

There will be food trucks, games, prizes and fun for all the family, organizers of the event promise.  No charge. From 4 p.m.

Irish dancers show off new routines 

Aficionados of Irish dancing can see new routines by the local group, Irish Dancing de México Guadalajara, in El Pony Pub (Morelos 2044). Saturday, February 6, from 9 p.m.  Free entry.

Mexican gifts for wholesale buyers

Later this month, buyers from around the world will descend on Tlaquepaque’s Enart (Exposición Nacional de Artículos de Regalo y Decoración Artesanal Mexicana), the country’s most important showplace for artesian gifts and decorations.

Each February and August, this four-day biannual exposition draws visitors from around the globe; 40 percent are from abroad, organizers say. The exhibitors include the finest designers and craftsmen and women in Mexico.  A prize is awarded for the most innovative piece created over the past six months. Gifted violinist releases first CD

Violinist Esther Yoo, the 21-year-old invited soloist at this weekend’s Jalisco Philharmonic Orchestra concerts (see page 29),  has announced that her debut album with the Philarmonia Orchestra of the United Kingdom and Russian conductor and pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy goes on sale February 12. It is released on the Deutsche Grammophon, one of the most recognized in classical music, and features violin concertos by Glazunov and Sibelius. Born in the United States and raised in Europe, Yoo began playing the violin at the age of four and made her concerto debut aged eight. 

Chapultepec’s Aurrera closes

The Bodega Aurrera supermarket that has occupied a prime position at the intersection of Avenidas Chapultepec and Mexico for the past 38 years has closed its doors.  The chain’s owners, Walmart de Mexico, has not yet announced whether the space will be converted into a different brand in the corporation’s portfolio.
