Artisans take over city center

As in years past, artisans from all over Jalisco travel to Guadalajara to participate in the annual Feria de la Artesanía over the two-week Easter holiday. This year’s fair has attracted 300 craftsmen and women from 80 municipalities in the state.  Among the stunning creations on view and for sale are blown glass, equipal furniture, ceramics, huarache shoes, textiles, chess sets, brass items, candies, liquor and much more.  The fair is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Plaza de Liberation (in front of the Degollado Theater) daily through Sunday, April 3. Free admission.

Four jazz bands in the woods

The Pinar Jazz Fest will be held in Pinar de la Venta, a subdivision eight kilometers west of Guadalajara, on Saturday April 9, 2 p.m. to midnight. The cost is 550 pesos per adult, which includes wine or craft beer. Tickets are available through Pinarjazzfest.com, where you can also find a map of how to reach the venue. The origins of the Pinar Jazz Fest lie in a series of “Jazz in the Woods” concerts held at private homes in Pinar de la Venta over the last year. Musicians taking part included Marc Frabbricatore, Arturo de la Torre, Willy Zavala, Joel Vandroogenbroeck and the Klaus Mayer Quartet. Local resident and jazz fan Michael Boudey is organizing the event.

Malek Jaziri of Tunisia won the Jalisco Open tennis tournament, defeating Stephen Robert of France 7-5, 3-6 y 6-6 (5-7) in an exciting final at the Panamericano Centro de Tenis in Zapopan. The crowd of around 2,500 gave both players warm applause at the end of an engrossing match.  Prior to the tournament Jaziri was ranked 106th in the world.   As well as valuable ATP points, the 32-year-old took home a check for US$14,400.

Lovable dogs looking for homes

Cute canines will be up for adoption in the Parque Mariano Azuela, to one side of the city arches on Avenida Vallarta, Sunday, April 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.  This regular adoption event takes place in tandem with the car-free Via RecreActiva, enjoyed by thousands of exercise seekers each Sunday.

Valsoto’s early works at Cabañas

Luis Valsoto, who made Guadalajara his home more than 40 years ago, is one of Mexico’s most respected living artists. Now aged 77, he has exhibited widely both in Mexico and abroad, becoming known for his quirky depictions of ordinary life and everyday things, especially domestic animals such as dogs, cats and horses.

The Instituto Cultural Cabañas  is currently offering a glimpse into Valsoto’s formative years, with a showing of 20 works created during his first year as a full-time artist.  It’s well worth a visit.

Daredevils thrill in Tlaquepaque

Throughout April, the famed Voladores de Papantla will be presenting their traditional display several times each day in downtown Tlaquepaque’s Jardín Hidalgo.  These indigenous daredevils hang by their feet on ropes atop a huge pole, unwinding themselves from a high altitude as they descend to the ground. Showtimes are from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5-9 p.m.  The “flyers” will also be selling craft items.
