Tourism fair in Plaza Liberacion

An annual tourism fair showcasing more than 80 Jalisco-based attractions and services will set up shop in downtown Guadalajara’s Plaza de la Liberacion Friday, July 15 through Sunday, July 17. 

Exhibitors will come from various parts of the state and include hotels and municipal tourism offices. There will be ongoing music and dance performances in the plaza on Friday and Saturday. The Feria Turismo will be open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Free entry.

Book Club discusses ‘Room’

The American Society (Amsoc) Book Club meeting on Thursday, July 21, 10 a.m. discusses “Room” (2010) by Emma Donoghue.

To five-year-old Jack, Room is the entire world. It is where he was born and grew up; it’s where he lives with his Ma as they learn and read and eat and sleep and play. Says Goodreads: “Told entirely in the language of the energetic, pragmatic five-year-old Jack, Room is a celebration of resilience and the limitless bond between parent and child, a brilliantly executed novel about what it means to journey from one world to another.” The book is available on Kindle.

Clay luchadores  on display

A new exhibit at the Centro Cultural El Refugio in Tlaquepaque (Donato Guerra 160) showcases a novel range of clay figures of luchadores (wrestlers) created by local artisans.  The craftsmen and women have used various methods to make the figures, including barro natural, barro negro, canelo, bandera, esgrafiado and petatillo.  Most of the figures will eventually be exported, says David Garcaa, promoter of the project that received funding from the Jalisco Culture Secretariat.

Operalia broadcast in the open air

Operalia, Placido Domingo’s international competition for rising opera stars that takes place at Guadalajara’s Teatro Degollado from July 19 to 24, will be broadcast on a local television channel and on large screens at two venues.

Only the final of the competition, on Sunday, July 24, 6 p.m. is open to the public. Tickets recently went on sale at the theater and Ticketmaster, but as only 400 were available to the general public, they quickly sold out,

The final will be shown on Canal 22, at the Teatro Diana  (tickets 100-300 pesos) and in the Plaza de la Liberacion outside the theater.  Forty contestants from 11 nations aged between 25 and 32 will be vying for prizes in several categories.

Ballet gala sells out

Tickets have sold out for the July 30 ballet gala at the Telmex Auditorium featuring Guadalajara native and English National Ballet principal Isaac Hernandez and a host of international stars.
