Inspired American School students meet young legislator

A group of 16 eighth-grade students from the American School Foundation of Guadalajara visited 26-year-old independent Congressman Pedro Kumamoto in the Jalisco State Legislature last week to tell him all about their idea for new legislation.

Accompanied by three staff members, the students outlined their proposal to ban the use of plastic bags in stores throughout the state. This effort is modeled after similar initiatives in other cities prohibiting plastic bags.

Kumamoto discussed with the students the different processes that are followed in order to pass legislation and offered some suggestions on steps they can take to advocate for the passage of a new law.

The 8th graders will invite the first-term lawmaker to the American School soon to give a more detailed presentation of their ideas.

Kumamoto remarked on how impressed he was with the students’ initiative and passion.
