Lake Chapala Democrats begin voter registration drive

The Lake Chapala Chapter of Democrats Abroad Mexico will begin a seven week long voter registration drive for U.S. expats next week.

The first sessions will be Monday, September 1, at the Lake Chapala Society (LCS), and Wednesday, September 3, at Salvador’s Restaurant in Ajijic. Both sessions run from 10 a.m. to noon.

Subsequent sessions will be at the same time on Monday and Wednesday each week at the same locations through October 15.

“Off year or mid-term elections usually draw a small turn out of voters but this year may be different,” says Francis C. Reidelberger, executive chair of the local organization.  “Control of the U.S. Senate is at stake in this election.  Which party does the best job of getting out the vote will determine the winner and, as in all close elections, absentee votes from expats will be very important.”

Reidelberger also says voter registration regulations change frequently for expats and he urges everyone to make sure they are eligible to vote.

“Do not assume you are eligible just because you were eligible in the last election,” he says.  “Many states are now requiring that voters re-register every election cycle.”

He says voters can easily check their voting eligibility status by using the www.canivote.org website and they may register and arrange to obtain absentee ballots by contacting the www.votefromabroad.org website.

“However, many people will still have questions and desire assistance with the process,” Reidelberger says.  “That’s why we run our voter assistance/registration program every year.”

This is a non-partisan program as the Democratic group will assist all expats who need voting assistance or information.
