Sunday, May 1 David Greenstein will present “Conquest of the Americas by Sword and Cross,” at Open Circle, 10:30 a.m., in the Lake Chapala Society Garden.
The discovery of the New World was arguably the most important event of the prior 1,000 years. After Columbus arrived, within a relatively short period of time, a few hundred Spaniard warriors had taken the Caribbean and conquered the Aztecs of Mexico and the Incas of Peru, peoples numbering into the millions. How was this possible?
Greenstein is a former California attorney and entrepreneur. He lived for ten years in the Cayman Islands where he built a Star Trek-themed B&B. He is a private pilot and an education junkie. David arrived Lakeside in 2004. For the last five years, he has cruised the seas giving history and culture lectures about various countries and several special interest topics including “The Innocence Project, Wrongfully Convicted.”

Buddhists
The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Sangha offers an extended meditation opportunity on the first sunday” of each month. Arrive by 9 a.m. May 1, and participate in one, two or three hours of alternating sitting and walking meditation.
Every Monday from 9 to 10 a.m. and every Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon, the center is open for a silent sitting and walking meditation periods.
Monday, May 2, Heart of Awareness offers a “Dharma Movie Matinee” starting at 3 p.m. The movie will be “Sacred Sites of the Dalai Lamas.”
A yoga class, taught by Latika Claude, is offered on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. A 50-peso donation is requested.
Every Wednesday afternoon, Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m., followed at 4:30 by a formal meditation period, dharma teaching and discussion period. May 4, the teaching will be the first in a tricycle retreat series titled “Meditation Illuminated: Integrating Buddhist wisdom and brain science” by John Yates, Ph.D. (Culadasa) and Matthew Immergut.
No “Drop In” practice or study on Friday May 6. The group meets again Friday, May 13.
The Sangha’s location is at Guadalupe Victoria 101 in Ajijic. The activities listed are open to anyone with an interest. The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Sangha is grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior meditation experience or affiliation is not required. LCS bus trips
The Lake Chapala Society sponsors a bus trip to the two craft towns Tonala and Tlaquepaque, Wednesday, May 4. Shop in Tonala for home decor and handicrafts; and in Tlaquepaque, find upscale retailers and fine-dining in a historical architecturally significant pedestrian-only zone. Cost is 300 pesos for members and 350 pesos for non-members. The bus departs promptly at 9 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.
Thursday, May 19, The LCS Bus heads to Gallerias Mall. Major retailers include Best Buy, Sears, restaurants Cheesecake Factory, PF Chang and more, also shop Costco, Sams and Super Walmart.
Cost for either trip is 300 pesos for members and 350 pesos for non-members. The bus departs promptly at 9 a.m. from the sculpture in La Floresta.
Rotary Club Ajijic
The Tenth Annual 5 de Mayo Fiesta fund-raiser for the Rotary Club Ajijic community projects is Thursday, May 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. at La Hotel Nueva Posada. Tickets are 400 pesos and include dinner with “Tour of Mexico” cuisine and music. A cash bar is available and a silent auction will be held. Tickets are available from Diane Pearl, Yoly’s, Rotary Members and La Nueva Posada.
The Ranch Cino de Mayo
Lakeside Spay & Neuter (The Ranch) holds a Cinco de Mayo fund-raiser Thursday, May 5 at La Bodega Restaurante and Bar, 16 de septiembre #124 in Ajijic. British Society
Sue Morris will speak on: “The NHS Lottery: Do they practice euthanasia?” at the next luncheon of the Lakeside British Society, Saturday, May 7, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant in Ajijic. The menu options are fish and chips, chicken pie or spinach quiche and are accompanied by zuccini flower soup (crema de flor de calabaza) and chocolate mousse. American Legion
American Legion Post 7 is celebrating Mothers’ Day, May 8. A social hour begins 3 p.m. and the pork rib dinner at 4 p.m. with live music. Cost is 200 pesos; 100 to members that are mothers. Tickets are available at the Legion, #114 Morelos Chapala.
Lake Chapala Garden Club
The Lake Chapala Garden Club is launching its first “Bring Your Gardener To Lunch” event Wednesday, May 18, noon, at La Nueva Posada Hotel, in Ajijic.
Club organizers hope this invitation will demonstrate how much garden lovers here appreciate their gardeners. Over lunch a talented bi-lingual expert gardener will create a living sculpture.
