Weekly Worship - June 18, 2016

St. Andrew’s Anglican

A portion of St. Paul’s furious letter to the Galatians is one of the Scripture readings at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church this week. What angered Paul was the suggestion that, in addition to having faith, there are certain things one has to do in order to be a Christian. Along with Paul, Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon, “Turning ‘Eithers’ into Neithers,” insists that faith requires nothing else, and in fact abolishes the distinctions we use to keep ourselves separated from others.

The Holy Eucharist begins at 10 a.m., preceded by the children’s bilingual Sunday School at 9:45 a.m. A coffee hour in the garden follows the worship service.

Every Sunday, the feeding programs supported by St. Andrew’s welcome donations of non-perishable items, left in the baskets by the church doors.

St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.

Lakeside Presbyterian

We all know the old question – which came first, the chicken or the egg? In a very real way, this is similar to the question we face in understanding which comes first for the Christian – faith or obedience?  Sunday, June 19, Pastor Ross Arnold of Lakeside Presbyterian Church will continue his series on The Cost of Discipleship with a sermon entitled “Faith + Obedience,” considering how we come to faith in God.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church invites everyone to experience their new approach to worship, which features both contemporary and traditional music set to upbeat arrangements. The congregation also has a new, increased emphasis on Communion, with celebration of the Lord’s Table on alternating Sundays, starting with the first Sunday of each month.

Lakeside Presbyterian Church meets in their new church building in Riberas del Pilar. Turn toward the lake at Mom’s Restaurant. The church is two blocks down on the right. The English-language service is at 10 a.m. and Spanish-language services are at 9 a.m. and noon.  Everyone is welcome.

Christ Church Episcopal

Christ Church Episcopal will observe the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost by celebrating The Holy Eucharist Sunday, June 19, 9:30 a.m. (Fathers’ Day) at the Little Chapel by the Lake in Chula Vista.  Fr. Danny Borkowski will preside and give a message with the theme “Enemy Territory,” based on Luke 8:26-39.

The congregations of Christ Church and the Little Chapel share a common fellowship time between their two services, from about 10:35 until 11:25 a.m.

The Christ Church lunch bunch meets 11:30 a.m. at Gosha’s, Carretera Oriente 24 (where Benno’s Computer use to be) in Ajijic.

Christ Church sponsors a Bible Study Tuesday, 2 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall of Little Chapel.  Come spend an hour tackling the Book of Genesis.

Unitarians

Sunday, June 19, the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship presents “Father’s Day – A Perspective,” written by Jan Manning and presented by Nancy Jordan-Zanot and Wes Weston, with technical and design help from Karyn Carpenter. It will consist of a bit of history of the day and a fictional conversation with a fictional father in which the group tries to capture the essence of what a father is.

The Unitarians now meet 10:30 a.m. at Hidalgo 261 in Riberas del Pilar, opposite the bell tower, on the north side of the Carretera.

Lake Chapala Baptist

“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.”

Says Brother Bob Hendrick: “These are among the closing remarks the Apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian church (1 Cor. 16:13) – act like men, be strong. In 1969 the governor of California signed into law the United States’ first no-fault divorce bill. In 2013 a study found that only 45.8 percent of American children reach age 17 with both biological parents married. I am thankful for a paterfamilias who was manly enough to see his job and his commitments through. He taught me the art of being a man. And my heavenly Father gives me the strength to do what I was taught. I also salute men manly enough to be stepdads raising their ‘bonus’ kids and single dads who stick to the task. Happy Fathers’ Day.”

The Lake Chapala Baptist Church celebrates worship service each Sunday, 11 a.m. at Santa Margarita 147 in Riberas del Pilar.

Little Chapel by the Lake

Sunday, June 19, the Little Chapel by the Lake will begin worship service at 11:30 p.m. Fellowship time will be from 11 to 11:30 a.m.

The guest speaker for June will be Pastor Ken Armstrong from Grants-Pass, Oregon.  Continuing in his series “The Purity of Inconvenience,” this Sunday’s message will be “Inconvenient Love,” drawn from 1 Cor. 13:4-8a and other verses.

The Little Chapel is located on the Ajijic-Chapala Carretera in Chula Vista, next to the golf course.

San Andres English

“In today’s celebration, with all our differences, we become one as we gaze in prayer on the Christ we have pierced and who gave His life for our sake.”

So says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min., who will offer the homily “The One Whom We Have Pierced” at San Andres Catholic Church’s English-language service Sunday, June 19, 9 a.m.

San Andres is located at the corner of Ramon Corona and Parroquia, one block from the Ajijic main plaza.
