2016 Chupinaya challenge

Fernando Azael “Dory” Mejia Gonzalez earned overall champion status for a second consecutive year in the July 17 running of the rough and tumble Chupinaya mountain race contest.

The accomplished Zapopan athlete finished the grueling 13.8 “For Savages Only” course in one hour, 24 minutes, 18 seconds, far off the record 1:16:44 mark set five years ago by U.S. runner Joe Gray.

Coming in for the top spot in the female division was Noemí Guzmán Gutiérrez of  Temacapulín, with a time of 1:48:23 that put her in 26th place overall in the full field of 505 competitors who completed the up-and-down loop that peaks at 2,400 meters above sea level.

First to cross the finish line was teenage contestant José Guadalupe González Orozco who ran the event’s alternate 6.5 kilometer recreational route in 34:38.

Elisa Rosa Isela Molina Barboza nailed first in the women’s field with a 44:48 finish. Mejia’s mother Trinidad González Garcia ran the short race in 56:02 to place first in female veteran’s division and tenth overall among the women.
