La Ola girls’ home announces major building drive

La Ola girls’ home is in the process of a major transition from confined housing in Jocotepec to the establishment of new facilities at Hotel Perico, located on the Ajijic-Chapala Libramiento.

The building is almost finished and the move is slated for mid-November. This move will improve the quality of living conditions for the 24 girls, bring them closer to their community of friends and supporters, and offer shorter transportation to school at Instituto Terranova.

To support this move, La Ola is currently engaged in a major building drive in collaboration with private donors and organizations to cover the cost of the new facilities and help with month-to-month operating costs.

A recent fundraiser at Adelita Bar and Grill raised 120,000 pesos, and a “Singing Contest” event at La Bodega Restaurant took in another small amount.  Instituto Terranova held a “Terra Color Race” on October 23, with proceeds split between Cruz Roja and La Ola, and Hotel Perico hosted a successful BBQ Brisket Benefit on October 27.

For further information on upcoming fundraising events or for donations, see the La Ola website at www.laolacasahogar.com, the La Ola Facebook page at La Ola Ministries - The Wave, the Guadalajara Reporter, or inquire by email at This email address is being protected from spambots. The mission of La Ola is to break the cycle of poverty and abuse, providing each girl with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence needed to stand on her own and live out her dreams. The goal of La Ola’s girls is to earn a university diploma and pursue professional careers. Two girls are now in nursing school, one is studying teaching, one law, and one administration.

La Ola was registered with the Mexican government in January 2010 through the philanthropic efforts of Dr. Bob Plinke, a retired Emergency Room physician from Tennessee, and his trauma nurse wife, Becky. The Plinkes are unpaid staff who coordinate efforts with local and international volunteers and minimal house staff.

La Ola exists primarily on private donations of approximately 165,000 pesos a month, covering household expenses, food, clothing, transportation, education (including a discounted tuition rate in collaboration with Instituto Terranova), and three Mexican housing staff. La Ola also coordinates efforts twice a year to provide outreach into the community to assist children in need of clothing and food.

To find out how you or your organization can make a donation or provide added support, contact La Ola at (387) 763-0749.  Arrangements can be made for credit or debit card, GoFundMe campaign, cash, or check. Volunteers are always needed for tutoring, preparing meals, and maintenance.

La Ola is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and U.S. and Mexico donations are tax deductible.
