LCS Closings
The Lake Chapala Society (LCS) will close on Wednesday, July 1 in observance of Canada Day, and again on Saturday, July 4 for the celebration of U.S. Independence Day.
Canada Day
The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 1 celebrates Canada’s 148th birthday on Wednesday, July 1 with a feast at the Nuevo Chapala Club House, from noon to 4 p.m.
The Canada Day meal will consist of chicken, ribs. sausage, coleslaw, potato salad and birthday cake.
There will be music for dancing and door prizes.

Royal Canadian Legion
Just in time to give a nod to the July 1 observance of Canada Day, the members of the local Branch 1 of the Royal Canadian Legion have launched the big raffle that is their main annual fundraiser.
First prize is a trip for two to the RIU Emerald Bay in Mazatlan – an upgrade from the previously announced hotel in Puerto Vallarta. This premier prize, valued at 10,000 pesos, is an all-inclusive late November trip for two, including transportation from Lakeside on a luxury bus.
Second prize is a day trip on the Cuervo Express excursion train from Guadalajara to Tequila. Prize winning tickets will be drawn on November 3.

Post 7
American Legion Post 7 in Chapala is marking U.S. Independence Day with an old-fashioned Fourth of July picnic. Those attending will begin gathering at the post in Chapala on Saturday, July 4, 1 p.m. The lunch, including fried chicken, corn on the cob, potato salad and a chocolate sundae, will be served to revelers at 2 p.m. Tickets at 130 pesos can be purchased by calling (376) 765-5752.
Conservatives’ Fourth
The Lakeside Conservatives Group is holding its fourth 4th of July Celebration Potluck at the Raquet Club (lower level under the Big Palapa) on Saturday, July 4, from 3-6 p.m.
Attendees are asked to bring their favorite 4th of July family food. Traditional hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided.
A host/open bar will be available or attendees are welcome to bring their own bottles.

Democrats, Progressives
Democrats Abroad and Lakeside Progressives are jointly hosting a July 4th celebration at La Nueva Posada in Ajijic on Saturday, July 4, from 3-6 p.m.
Attendees can enjoy hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, coleslaw, homemade apple pie and ice cream.
There will be a cash bar, games and a raffle. Music will be courtesy of Jimmy Barto and Noe Raygoza.
Tickets are available ahead of the day for 200 pesos at Diane Pearl’s or La Nueva Posada. At the door the cost will be 250 pesos.
Genealogy
The members of the Lakeside Genealogy Forum will meet on Monday, June 29, 2-4 p.m. in the Sala of the Lake Chapala Society.
Karen Clifford, the meeting’s presenter, will organize the showing of a Legacy Family Tree Webinar, “Overcoming Destroyed or Missing Records.”
Many family historians searching for documentation to prove the relationships in their family lines discover that all county records were lost in fires that destroyed the courthouse. They don’t have leads to go further on an ancestor’s line. Others have you search local repositories and the records for the years needed are missing. This meeting’s webinar discusses a handful of proven research techniques that may help searchers overcome destroyed or missing records.
The Family History Center at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There is a wealth of information available to researchers there to fill in gaps in family history.
British Society
Members of the British Society are advised that the organization will not meet in July, but will reconvene for lunch and a presentation at Restaurant Manix on Saturday, August 1.
19th Anniversary Event
To mark the 19th anniversary of the Villa Infantil de Guadalupe y San Jose near San Luis Soyatlan, all friends and benefactors of the orphanage are invited to join the children and their caregivers in a celebration on Saturday, July 11.
The day’s events will begin with a Holy Mass of thanksgiving, and continue with a potluck luncheon, according to Director H.C. Patricia Nava (Sister Paty). Attendees can expect a few surprises, hugs and joyful antics to fill out the afternoon.
Summer Music
Ready for a little music? The LCS is sponsoring a Summer Music Festival on Saturday July 11, 12:30 to 6 p.m. at the organization’s campus. In addition to non-stop music by the TallBoys Band and Black Swan and Diamonds, the afternoon event will be studded with surprises.
Party goers can expect to find a 50/50 raffle and an array of food provided by Restaurant 4 and Just Chillin’.
Advance tickets at 120 pesos are available at the LCS or at Diane Pearl Colecciones. Tickets at the gate will be 150 pesos.
LCS Singles
LCS Singles will hold a mixer in the bar area of the Real de Chapala Hotel in La Floresta on Wednesday, July 15, 4-6 p.m.
The usual seating arrangement will be altered to bistro-style tables to enable more mixing and mingling while enjoying the beautiful atmosphere.
Buy-one-get-one-free drinks are included. This is a great place to stay and dine after the mixer.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Everyone knows someone who needs a miracle. The Gospel reading for the Sunday, June 28, 10 a.m. worship service at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church recounts two of Jesus’s miracles, one sandwiched inside the other. One is a healing, the other a resurrection. How does that happen? Is there a formula for getting a miracle? And, as Fr. Winston Welty’s sermon asks, what happens, “When You Don’t Get Your Miracle”?
Each week Children’s Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m. Refreshments and fellowship follow the service in the garden afterwards. On the last Sunday of each month the congregation brings donations to provide school lunches for hungry children in Mezcala. Each Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes donations of non-perishable food items, which can be left in the baskets by the church doors.
St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.
Lakeside Presbyterian
Pastor Ross Arnold continues his series of sermons on Jesus’ commandments at Lakeside Presbyterian on Sunday, June 28, 10 a.m. with, “If you love Me, trust the Holy Spirit.”
Says Arnold: “Jesus promised His disciples that He would send the Holy Spirit as a comforter and friend, and they would never be alone. We talk to God, we thank Jesus, but we forget to call on the Holy Spirit. Jesus said, ‘All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.’”
The Pastor’s Forum convenes in the church library at 11:30 a.m. Attendees can ask Pastor Ross questions about the sermon, the church, the faith or other topics.

San Andres English
During the Sunday, June 28, 9 a.m. English Mass at San Andres Parish Church, Fr. Basil G. Royston, D.Min, leads the congregation in a discussion of the gift of life.
“The Lord who gives life, made us to live,” says Royston. “Death is totally opposed to God, who is life itself. And yet, Christ accepted death in order that we might live. He took our poverty to make us rich.”
Members of the group who are supporters of Villa Infantil will be making plans for attending the 19th anniversary Mass and potluck celebration at the orphanage on Saturday, July 11.
Little Chapel
Services at the Little Chapel by the Lake will continue with a 10:45 a.m. refreshment and fellowship period on Sunday, June 28. The members of the interdenominational congregation will assemble at 11:15 a.m. for worship in the sanctuary. Along with music, prayers and scripture, the pastor will deliver a message on “The Evolution of Peter.” The message will trace Peter’s transformation from a simple fisherman to a spiritual leader who even in dying testified to the majesty of Christ.
The study “Experiencing God” will continue on Tuesday, June 30, 7 p.m. The study includes a text, video and a discussion.
The Little Chapel by the Lake is located on the mountain side of the Carretera just east of the golf course in Chula Vista.
Christ Church
Christ Church Lakeside will celebrate Holy Communion from the Presanctified Elements on Sunday, June 28, 9:30 a.m. in the Little Chapel by the Lake. Deacon Rob Wells will preside and give a message based on Mark 5:21-43 with the theme, “Don’t Be Afraid.”
The congregations of Christ Church Lakeside and the Little Chapel share a common coffee fellowship time between their two services from about 10:35 a.m. until 11:10 a.m.
Unitarian Universalist
A panel discussion led by Trudy Crippen and Bob Koches, centering on medical insurance, hospitals, private caregiver and extended care facility options available for the expat community, will be featured at the Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship meeting on Sunday, June 28, 10:30 a.m.
Unitarian Universalists search for truth along many paths. They gather around common moral values that include the inherent worth and dignity of every person. They are a caring, liberal, open-minded community that encourages others to seek their own spiritual path wherever it leads.

Buddhist Group
When the Heart of Awareness Community meets on Wednesday, July 1, Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m. followed by a formal meditation, dharma teachings and discussion at 4:30 p.m. A recording of Jack Kornfield teaching “The Mandala of Awakening” will be featured.
The First Sunday Long Sit is on Sunday, July 5, from 9 a.m. until noon. Those attending are asked to arrive by 8:50 a.m. to prepare for three rounds of 40 minutes sitting and 20 minutes walking meditation.
The sangha is at Guadalupe Victoria 101, suites A-B, in Ajijic. The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior experience or affiliation is not required. Open Circle
Those attending the Sunday, June 28 meeting of Open Circle will gather at 10 a.m. for refreshments and socializing. A presentation by local writers Carol Bradley and Bobby Johns will begin at 10:30 a.m.
Bradley’s “The Shadow of a Star Chief” is about a small-town, midcentury family caught up in petty gossip that impacted their lives long after the object of the gossip moved away. Bobby Johns’ delightful stories are pure memoir spiced with his idiosyncratic brand of Cornish wit and enthusiasm.
Bradley is a Canadian writer living on the south shore of Lake Chapala with her husband, Ian, and two rescue dogs. Five of her stories will be published in the fall in an anthology, “All Our Words Needed Saying.” She won the Ojo del Lago’s best feature article award in 2013.
The life of Bobby Johns began in Cornwall, England. After graduating as a production engineer, he became an educator. He was a teacher instructor for the Faculty of Education of Queens University in Northumberland County, Ontario for 12 years. Johns has written two books, “Adventures of a Young Cornishman,” and “Continuing Adventures of a Cornishman.”
