Gourmet’s delight
Five local gourmet restaurants are presenting a gastronomic festival at the Central Cultural Gonzalez Gallo (old Chapala train station) on Sunday, August 16, from noon to 6 p.m.
The chefs/owners will each present a different signature dish and teach a 45-minute cooking course. Admission at 120 pesos for adults and 60 pesos for children (under 13) includes a ticket to taste a dish from each restaurant and attend cooking classes. Local craft beer and quality wines will be available for purchase. Participating restaurants are Alex’s Pasta Bar, El Jardin de Ninette, Gossips Kitchen, St. Remy Du Lac and Tabarka.
The five restaurateurs are coming together to promote the quality food, drink and service that can be found in the lakeside area.

Donation
Tom Thompson presents Maritza Freyslinger, a representative from the School for Special Children, with a check for 117,507 pesos, a special donation from the estate of Deborah Greenfield. Thompson’s company, Barbara’s Bazaar, conducted the estate sale of the personal possessions Greenfield left to the school.
Learning Seminar.
Lake Chapala Society (LCS) members are invited to attend the Tuesday, August 11 learning seminar from noon to 1:15 p.m. The featured program is a piece by Monica Lewinsky titled “The Price of Shame. Fred Harland is the chairperson.
“Public shaming as a blood sport has to stop,” Lewinsky has said. In 1998 she lost her personal reputation on a global scale and almost instantaneously after a brief fling with President Clinton. Today, that kind of online public shaming is nearly constant — and can turn deadly. In this brave talk, she takes a hard look at our online culture of humiliation, and asks for a different way.
Lakeside Progressives
At their July 29 meeting, the Lakeside Progressives voted unanimously to endorse Senator Bernie Sanders for president of the United States.
The “Organizing Kickoff” featured Sanders speaking via live feed to the local group (and 3,499 other groups). Over 100,000 of his supporters participated.
The next Lakeside Progressives meeting is on Tuesday, August 11, 4 p.m. at the Peacock Garden. This month’s gathering will develop plans to continue the group’s support of Sanders. Other topics and presentations may be introduced by members.
This is a group of like-minded people looking for progressive solutions to problems not being addressed by the major political parties. Most attendees have an early dinner at the restaurant following the meeting and continue the discussions.

Legion Softball
The inaugural workout of the Co-ed Legion Softball group is scheduled for Tuesday, August 11, 5 p.m. at the Campo Nuevo Estacion Club Redes Soccer Field in Chapala.
The privately-owned soccer field is very level, never muddy and has a pavilion bar and an adjacent large grass parking lot. There will be a 20-peso fee per player for use of the field. The game will be played following basic slow pitch rules with minor adjustments for safety and local conditions.

Not-So-Newlywed
The latest fun night at American Legion Post 7 in Chapala sets six well-known, longstanding married local couples against each other as they try to answer questions about their spouses at the live “Not so Newlywed Game.”
Couples will compete to win prizes, while the audience can also participate in the fun.
Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. with the game show beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets for members are 130 pesos. Non-members will pay 150 pesos to attend.

Garden Club
The Lake Chapala Garden Club meets for their monthly meeting, lunch and program on on Wednesday, August 19, noon, at La Nueva Posada.
The club has been helping members with all aspects of gardening at lakeside since 1977. On the third Wednesday of each month, members meet to tour of a local garden followed by lunch and a garden-related program.
Yearly dues are 100 pesos for individuals, 150 pesos for couples or 200 pesos for a family. Guests are welcome. Bus Trip
The LCS will host a bus excursion to Guadalajara’s Galerias Mall and related stores (including Costco and Sams) on Thursday, August 20. The cost is 250 pesos for LCS members and 300 pesos for non-members.
The bus departs from the sculpture in La Floresta at 9:30 a.m. and returns at about 4:30 p.m.

Charity Bazaar
Planners for the Fauna Silvestre Mexico Bazaar on Sunday, August 30 are looking to raise funds to benefit veterinarian Pepe Magaña and the Chapala Bomberos (firefighters).
Regulations prevent the firefighters from accepting cash donations, so their portion of the proceeds will be used to purchase items they need.
Magaña works seven days a week and is always available to care for rescued domestic and wild animals.
For the bazaar to be a success, the organizers need castoffs to sell. Anyone who would like to donate unused or unwanted items can leave them at Flora Exotica (the site of the sale) or call (376) 765-4916 to request pick up.
No item is too big or small and they’ll sell anything. Donors can specify if they wish the proceeds to go to the fire department or Magaña.
Lakeside Presbyterian
“Today there are many different religions, many different Christian denominations, and many different doctrines,” says Pastor Ross Arnold of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church. “How are we to know what is true? Which is the right path, and how can we be sure? Jesus told his followers to take the ‘narrow way,’ and he gave directions so others can know that way.”
On Sunday, August 9, Arnold will talk about the signs to look for in his sermon, “If You Love Me – Take the Narrow Way.”
Also this Sunday, Lakeside Presbyterian celebrates their Second Sunday Potluck. Members of both the English-language and Spanish-language congregations share a meal between services, starting around 11:30 a.m.

St. Andrew’s Anglican
Fr. Winston Welty will ponders the thought, ‘Be angry, but do not sin” in the St. Andrew’s Anglican service on Sunday, August 9.
This is one of the Bible readings that gives that counsel, yet people of faith usually see anger as a vice rather than a virtue. Welty’s sermon – “Godly Anger” – suggests an approach that heals rather than harms, and unites rather than divides.
Sunday School begins at 9:45 a.m., with the worship at 10 a.m. There is fellowship in the garden afterwards. Donations are received for the support of children and their families in Jocotepec. Every Sunday, the feeding program supported by St. Andrew’s welcomes donations of non-perishable food items, left in baskets by the church doors.
The monthly 8:30 a.m. breakfast on Wednesday 12 is at Min Wah Restaurant.
The annual St. Andrew’s Parish Picnic will be held in the church garden on Thursday, August 13. The social hour begins at 1 p.m. followed at 2 p.m. by a meal featuring sloppy Joes and other favorite dishes.
St. Andrew’s is at Calle San Lucas 19, a block south of the Carretera in Riberas del Pilar.
San Andres English
“The readings during the Mass this week lead us to think of the Father who draws us to Himself,” says Fr. Basil G. Royston, D. Min. “Elijah was drawn to the mountain of God by the Lord who gave him food and drink. Still today, the Father is drawing us to himself by offering us the Bread of Life at this Mass.”
The August 9, 9.30 a.m. mass at San Andres Catholic Church takes place on the second Sunday of the month, when parishioners may bring their extra white envelopes with offerings for the English congregation’s outreach programs.
Chapel by the Lake
Members of the Little Chapel by the Lake will join the congregation of Christ Church for a shared coffee and fellowship hour on Sunday, August 9, 10:30 a.m.
As a part of the 11:15 a.m. service, Pastor Gene Raymer will speak on the topic “Thy Kingdom Come.”
Raymer points out that the prayer is more than a prayer for the establishment of God’s ultimate rule at the end of time. At the end of the service, the fellowship will continue with a meal at a local restaurant.
As an interdenominational congregation, the Little Chapel supports all Christian beliefs and welcomes believers of all denominations. The church is located on the Carretera just east of the golf course in Chula Vista.
Christ Church
Fr. Danny Borkowski will celebrate the Holy Eucharist Rite II on Sunday August 9, 9:30 a.m., at the Little Chapel by the Lake. His message is “The Bread Is My Flesh,” based on John 6:51.
The Christ Church congregation and that of the Little Chapel share friendship and coffee each Sunday from 10:35 to 11:10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall of the Little Chapel.
The Tuesday Bible Study sponsored by Christ Church has resumed and meets at 2 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall. The group is currently working on an in-depth study of the Gospel of John.
Unitarian Universalists
The topic for the Sunday, August 9, 10 a.m. meeting of the Lakeside Unitarian Universalist Fellowship is “Unitarians, Jews, Muslims – Brothers Under the Skin.” Cate Howell’s presentation explores the historical relationship between Unitarianism, Judaism and Islam.
The group meets at Rio Bravo 10 in Ajijic.
Open Circle
During the Sunday, August 9, 10:30 a.m. Open Circle presentation, “Three Rs: Readin’, Writin’ and ‘Rithmetic,” Arnt J. Thorkildsen features a summation of the changes wrought by Johannes Gutenberg’s movable type printing press.
Man learned how to read and write in schools; affordable books led to libraries. Humans became educated and had access to ideas in every language.
Thorkildsen will discuss the impact of the printing press on human history and will also read “Erika’s Letter” from the book “Only My Life” by Gerda Weissman Klein.
The book is about Nazi labor camps and man’s inhumanity.
Thorkildsen was born in Norway. He moved with his family to Seattle in 1947. He grew up and was educated there, majoring in history, his first love. He served in the U.S. Navy and saw active duty in Korea. Seven years ago, he settled in Ajijic.
On August 16, Dr. Sam Thelin, the medical director of Chapala Cruz Roja, is the invited speaker.
Buddhist Community
When the Heart of Awareness Community meets on Wednesday, August 12, Noble Silence begins at 4 p.m. and is followed by formal meditation, dharma teachings and then discussion at 4:30 p.m. The lesson will be a video dialogue between Rick Hanson and Fleet Maull on “Buddha’s Brain: Neuroscience and Mindfulness.”
The sangha is at Guadalupe Victoria 101, suites A-B, in Ajijic. The Heart of Awareness is a non-sectarian community grounded in the teachings of the Buddha as preserved in the Theravada/Vipassana tradition. Prior experience or affiliation is not required.
