End Polio Now

The Rotary Club of Ajijic is holding its annual End Polio fundraiser Friday, October 28, 5-8 p.m. at Roberto’s Restaurant.

Tickets are 400 pesos. Dinner includes Caesar salad, poblano soup, choice of chicken or fish piccata, noodles Alfredo, broccoli and chocolate brittle brownie for dessert. Frankie Dino will provide the music.

Halloween

Put on your mask and dance! Ocampo 71 holds a Halloween Scare, Saturday, October 29, 8 p.m. with prizes awarded for best costume and pumpkin. Perry’s Mo-Jo is holding a Halloween costume party Monday, October 31, 5 to 8 p.m. with fantastic prizes for the best get-up, a huge buffet and live music. Mama’s Bar has a special dinner that same night with dancing by Sol and Luna. 

BarCo will have live music by Mike Fortier and the Suspects for its third annual Halloween bash on October 31, 8 p.m. Sound Machine plays at the The Iron Horse’s first Halloween party from 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 29. Prizes awarded for sexiest, scariest and best-dressed couple.

Zombie thriller

The Zombie horde is working hard to perfect their dance moves for the “Thrill the World happening at the Ajijic Plaza Saturday, October 29, beginning 5 p.m. The zombies then parade down Hidalgo to Seis Esquinas (Six Corners) to continue dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” before returning to the Ajijic Plaza at 6 p.m. where they will join families, friends and neighbors in celebration. A buffet dinner will be prepared by Manix. Tickets, 300 pesos, of which 50 pesos will go to Chapala Cruz Roja, are available at Diane Pearl’s, Mia’s Boutique, Jose Melendrez and  at Club Exotica on Saturday from 1-3 p.m.

Open Circle

Dr. Sam Thelin presents “End of Life” at Open Circle on Sunday, October 30, 10:30 a.m. in the garden of the Lake Chapala Society.

Dr. Thelin will discuss the meaning of death and provide an overview of the dying process in natural and diseased situations. He’ll talk about palliative care in terminal patients and non-terminal patients, and common misconceptions about euthanasia. In short, he will teach us about options so we can make informed decisions in creating structured and formal plans and in communicating our end-of-life wishes, including advance directives, hospice, palliative care, and other wishes (with example formats).

Thelin holds degrees in General Science, Biology, and Medicine. He studied and worked in Texas before obtaining his medical license in Mexico. His interest in emergency medicine started during his social service, and he continued in that field until recently expanding into private practice. Here he sees an increasing number of patients seeking personalized palliative care.

Genealogy Forum

The Genealogy Forum will meet Monday, October 31, 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Riberas del Pilar. Marci Bowman will present an update on Google strategies for genealogical research and new ideas for searching for images. The Family History Center will be open after the meeting for those who want to experiment with Bowman’s suggestions. The Center is open to anyone interested in researching their own family history on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon. This is the only place where you can use subscription sites without cost. The Genealogy Forum and the Family History Center are open to everyone with volunteers available to help you navigate the websites. There are no costs or dues. Beginners and experienced genealogists are all welcomed.

LCS Health Day

Various vaccines and immunizations and blood pressure monitoring will be available to the general public at the Lake Chapala Society’s Health Day on the Neill James Patio, Thursday, November 3, 9:30 a.m. to noon. 

A lecture by Dr. Lawrence Whitehurst, “Arthritis – Is it a Disease or Aging, and What Can We Do About It,” will be delivered in the LCS Sala at 11 a.m. 

Sign-up for shots is in the LCS office no later than Monday, October 31. Immunizations available include: Prevnar 13, Pneumonia, Zostavax, Influenza, Typhim VI and Hepatitis A/B.  Influenza and pneumonia vaccines may be taken on the same day. Neither the Hepatitis nor the Typhoid shot may be taken with any other shot. Payment is due on the day the shots are administered.

Spay/Neuter Clinic

Operacion Amor holds a spay/neuter clinic Friday, November 4 to Sunday, November 6 in Chapala for dogs and cats of people of limited means.

Lakeside British Society

The next Lakeside British Society lunch is Saturday, November 5, 1 p.m. at Manix Restaurant when Eduardo Ramos will be the featured speaker. 

Stroll back in time with Ajijic historian Eduardo Ramos. As a child Ramos collected stories of Ajijic from the senior generation and has been instrumental in reviving many lost traditions in this pueblo. He is the director of the Ajijic Passion Play, the Verbena, Battle of the Flowers and probably a lot of other events you never knew existed. Ramos is a wealth of information about Ajijic, from pre-hispanic times to the modern day. Curious about Ajijic? Ask Eduardo.

The menu is zucchini flower soup or a small salad, meat pie, gravy and chips or fish with almond sauce and rice, or pasta primavera with a large salad. Dessert is strawberry shortcake. The cost is 135 pesos (not including tip). Manix is at Ocampo 57 in Ajijic, and has parking available on an adjacent lot.

US election night

Democrats Abroad holds an election night extravaganza at Club Exotica, on the Plaza in Ajijic, Tuesday, November 8, 7:30 p.m. Widescreen projection of CNN International’s coverage of the event will be teamed with snacks and a cash bar.  Cost is 50 pesos. 

LCS Zoo bus trip

The Lake Chapala Society is sponsoring a bus trip to the Guadalajara Zoo, Wednesday, November 9. Tickets (370 pesos for members, 420 pesos non-members) include bus transportation, a train ride, the safari and aquatic shows, and are on sale at the LCS service desk. A ride on the cable car is an extra 43 pesos. 

The bus will leave from the sculpture in La Floresta promptly at 9 a.m. and depart the Zoo promptly at 3:30 p.m.

Flamed desserts

Thayne Madrid showed members of the Culinary Arts Society of Ajijic (CASA) how to prepare a couple of flamed desserts at the group’s October meeting. This month the food presentations were based on Food Network’s Chopped series. Winners presenting in the main dish category were Judith Greenberg in first place for her Korean noodle salad, a tie for second place between Michele Lococo (who also won the people’s choice and presentation awards) for her glazed spinach cups with kiwi salsa and Jose Fernandez’s roasted pork with spinach, chilies and kiwi salsa. Margaret Ancira won third place for her green enchiladas royal.

In the chopped dessert category, Sally Myers won first place for Italian bread pudding, Jose Melendrez second place and people’s choice for licorice chocolate brownies and third place was a tie between Carol Westbrook (who also won the presentation award) for her pistachio licorice and chocolate cupcakes and Allison Quattrochi for her anise biscotti with almonds, dipped in chocolate.

Judges were Barbara Romo Gutierrez, Chef Andrew Robertson and James Wayne.

The next meeting of CASA is Monday, November 14, 3:30 p.m. at La Mision restaurant.

Buddhists

The Heart of Awareness Buddhist Sangha meets weekly on Wednesdays. Noble Silence begins at 3:30 p.m. followed at 4 p.m. by a formal meditation period, dharma teachings and discussion. This week, on November 1, the meditation period will be followed by brief presentations on the history and structure of The Heart of Awareness.

The center is open for hour-long silent meditation periods Sunday and Monday, from 9 to 10 a.m. and Thursday from 11 a.m. to noon.

Marine Corps bash 

The 241st birthday of the U.S. Marine Corps will be celebrated Thursday, November 10 at La Nueva Posada (Donato Guerra 9, Ajijic).  

The event begins at 1 p.m. with cocktails and stories.  Lunch and cake is served from 2 p.m.  The cost of 210 pesos includes salad, bolillo bread, a “combined plate” featuring different foods, dessert and tip.  Beverages are not included. Dress is smart casual.

Remembrance Day

Stephane Charbonneau, the Canadian Consul and Senior Trade Commissioner in Guadalajara, and L.Col. Loic Roy, Canadian Deputy Defense Attaché in Mexico, will be the honored guests at the Remembrance Day service conducted Friday, November 11, 10:30 a.m. The ceremony is presented by two Lake Chapala organizations: the 904 Wing of The Royal Canadian Air Force Association and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 1.

The event commemorating this special day is open to the public. Guests should plan to arrive early and must be seated by 10:30 a.m. at the property of the Sisters of the Order of Benedictinas Del Santisimo Sacramento, located approximately 300 meters north of the of the Carretera on Calle Jesus Garcia Norte. The street is located across the Carretera from Panino’s Deli. A sign will be posted on the corner.

Following the service there will be a barbecue catered by Manix Restaurant with music by DJ Phil and Brenda. Cocktails begin at noon and the buffet will open at 1 p.m.  A limited number of tickets are available at 250 pesos and must be pre purchased ahead of the event at Diane Pearl.

Jaltepec Christmas dinner

Jaltepec Centro Educativo will host its annual festive Christmas fund-raising dinner Tuesday, November 29 (contribution 650 pesos) and luncheon Wednesday, November 30 (550 pesos). Wine to be served is Las Moras – white Sauvignon Blanc or red Cabernet Sauvignon at 250 pesos per bottle. Those who wish to preorder a bottle of wine should do so when they reserve. Toys for Tots

American Legion Post Three in Chapala joins with Los Gueros motorcycle club for the third annual Toy Run to benefit the children of Mezcala.  The event will be held Saturday, December 17, beginning with a breakfast at 10 a.m. at the Legion. 

Both cars and motorcycles from any clubs or single riders are welcome to join in the procession. Drop off any toy donations at Iron Horse Saloon, Just Chillin’ “Baby,” Adelidas Bar and Grill, Mama’s Bar or the Lake Chapala Society. Monetary donations can be left at Legion headquarters or Just Chillin’ before December 15. The toy run depart from the Mezcala Plaza at noon.
