Chivas claim victory in Clasico Tapatio

A late winner for Chivas handed the team victory over their fierce Guadalajara rival Atlas in the “Clasico Tapatio,” the oldest derby match in Mexican football last Sunday.

Jair Pereira sent 40,000 Chivas fans wild when he netted a 92nd-minute goal that secured victory for the home team. With the win, Chivas look likely to qualify for the knockout stage of the tournament. Atlas, meanwhile, languish at the bottom of the league. The atmosphere at the game was intense, but 1,500 police made sure there was no stadium violence, unlike in previous years when brawls had marred the event.
