Tonala hosts 'Dance of Tastoanes'

Clad in traditional costumes, Tonala residents carry out the “Dance of the Tastoanes,” an annual ritual which dates back hundreds of years commemorating an indigenous insurgence during the Spanish invasion of western Mexico.

A prize-giving ceremony for the best masks and a homage to long-standing participants Celestino Ortega Hernandez and Ponciano Ortega Vazquez takes place Thursday, August 9, at 8 p.m. at the Jorge Wilmot Museo Nacional de Ceramica on Constitucion #104, between Hidalgo and Morelos in central Tonala.
