Corn producers vent their anger

Jalisco corn growers clashed with state police Wednesday during a protest on Avenida Vallarta. The farmers are demanding a 250-peso per ton payment, in addition to their government subsidy, which they receive due to the current low price of corn.   Protestors set fire to a tractor on Avenida Gonzalez Gallo before marching up Juarez and Vallarta, in a bid to reach Casa Jalisco, the residence of the Jalisco governor.  After a few minor scuffles, a line of police officers blocked their passage, so the demonstrators instead turned around and went downtown to the Government Palace. There, they spoke to representatives of the state government but failed to reach any agreement.  The U.S. Consulate General considered the protest of sufficient danger to issue a warning to its citizens via social media to avoid the area.  No one was injured, nor were any arrests made.
