Candidate called out for political u–turn

Talking of allegiances, Villanueva this week was outed by his opponents for his political expediency, having openly campaigned for left-wing maverick Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador during his presidential bid in 2006. Fast forward nine years, and Villanueva is running for the PRI – arguably Lopez Obrador’s most ardent enemy – in Mexico’s most prestigious municipality.  Political analysts say Villanueva is a product of the ‘University of Guadalajara school of politics,’ one that puts self-interest and that of the city’s monolithic public education institute – he’s an ex-alumni – above any clear political ideology.  Of course, the fact that Lopez Obrador’s aura has dimmed dramatically over the past decade, with his new party, Morena, now polling less than one percent in Guadalajara, may have much to do with Villanueva’s apparent lack of loyalty.
