Businessman killed in botched kidnapping

Unknown assailants in two vehicles confronted Reynosa as he arrived at his business in Colonia Industrial Belenes in Zapopan around 9 a.m.

According to witness testimony, the victim put up strong resistance as the aggressors tried to force him into one of their vehicles.

Police say several shots were fired during the struggle, fatally wounding the victim.

The assailants fled, leaving Reynosa fighting for his life on the ground. He died before medical help arrived.

Their two vehicles, a Chevrolet Yukon and a Toyota Sienna, were later found abandoned in the Arcos de Zapopan neighborhood.

According to El Financiero newspaper, Reynosa owned Gonzalez Gallo, a tequila distillery founded in the 1950s whose labels “El Musico” and “El Tejaban” are mostly sold in the United States.

El Financiero revealed that Reynosa had recently been accused by agave farmers of acting in bad faith in his role as an intermediary between them and tequila manufacturers.

Of little comfort to Reynosa‘s family would have been the announcement this week from President Enrique Peña Nieto that kidnappings in Mexico have fallen by 27 percent compared to 2012.
