19-year-old women smothers mother to death with pillow

Investigators say Cinthia Guzman tried to hide the crime by telling police that an intruder had broken into the house in Guadalajara’s Colonia Miravalle and killed her mother after stealing a purse and video equipment.

Guzman’s boyfriend, Oscar Jimenez Espinoza, 18, was also arrested for aiding in the homicide.

Police say Guzman confessed to the murder after they discovered a backpack in the house containing the supposedly stolen items and her mother’s identification documents.

A report released by the Guadalajara District Attorney’s Office (Ministerio Publico) noted that Guzman admitted having a strained relationship with her mother, who she said was “always angry” and constantly comparing her with her sister.  She told police that her mother ignored her when a friend tried to rape her. The police report also said that Guzman had apparently asked her boyfriend to kill her mother on two previous occasions.

Two days before the January 12 murder, Guzman had learned that would not be able to graduate from high school because her grades in one class were poor.  She told police that she decided  to kill her mother because she was scared of how she might react.

The couple have been charged with femicide, a crime that carries a prison sentence of 25 to 45 years.
