Driving in GDL can be hazardous to your wallet

If you have non-factory-installed tinted (polarizado) windows on your car, or do not have a recent anti- pollution (verificación) sticker you could be in for a hefty fine.

The Jalisco secretariats of Mobility (Semov) and Environment (Semadet) are setting up checkpoints in various places around the city.

Las Thursday they fined 450 motorists in the course of a six-hour shift. Some 70 percent of Metro area motorists do not have their verification sticker. According to Semadet chief Magdalena Ruiz Mejia 54 percent of the 1,9 million privately owned vehicles in the metro area have obsolete technology. With 96 percent of the air pollution coming from vehicles, this is where state authorities are putting their muscle to work in order to get air quality back to a livable level. Fines run from about 730 pesos to 2,190 pesos. This year vehicles that end in 1, 2, 3 or 4 should have their 2016 stickers.

Semov is also targeting tinted windows and those whose license plates are either missing, doubled over or behind plastic covers. In the last 7 weeks 14,820 vehicles were fined. Motorcycles are also checked for helmets and reflective vests.
