Reward offered for leads on Zapopan cop killer

A Zapopan municipal police officer died in a shooting incident during a routine traffic stop at the corner of Tepeyac and Palenque in Ciudad del Sol on Friday, June 3.

Initial reports indicated that the aggressor managed to wrestle away a weapon from officer Fortunato Pérez Contreras, before firing three times at his chest at close range.

A massive manhunt ensued, with a helicopter employed in a bid to track the assailant.  As of press time no arrest had been made. A reward of 100,000 pesos has been offered for information leading to his capture.

Pérez Contreras, 46, joined the Zapopan police force in 1993.  Municipal and state dignitaries attended a ceremony in his honor on Sunday prior to his burial.

Zapopan Mayor Pablo Lemus said Pérez Contreras’ family will not only receive proceeds from his life insurance policy and his full salary, but also an extra 15,000 pesos each month during the remainder of his administration.
