IMSS carries out weekend surgeries to clear backlog

A new program that see some surgeries carried out on weekends for the first time is allowing the Jalisco delegation of the Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social (IMSS) to make headway in clearing its backlog of pending operations.

Just over 500 minor surgeries were carried out between April 19 and June 19, IMSS Jalisco delegate Marcelo Castillero Manazano said this week. Many of the patients had been waiting four months for their operations.

Castillero also said the “Unifila” program that aims to reduce waiting times in ER to a maximum of 40 minutes is seeing results.  One of the main difference in the program is that patients are now received by doctors, who immediately assess the patient’s condition.  Patients now receive a color classification that determines how quickly they will be attended to.
