Chinese scientists share experiences with Chapala officials on respective lakes

Chapala Mayor Joaquín Huerta welcomed Chinese officials Guo Xuequin and Yan Bangyou on a one-day visit to lakeside last week.

The representatives of the Jiagxi Province Department of Science and Technology were here to exchange experiences on stewardship for Lake Poyang and Lake Chapala.

Both are the largest freshwater lakes in their respective countries, hold the distinction as important sanctuaries for migratory birds, and face threats of desecration.  Chapala and Poyang also share designations as Ramsar wetlands sites and affiliation with conservation group Living Lakes.

Also present at the meeting was Manuel Villagómez, president of the Lerma-Chapala-Santiago Basin Foundation.
