Speed traps slated for Chapala bypass

Now that the Chapala-Ajijic bypass (Libramiento) is in good condition, Mayor Javier Degollado is asking Jalisco’s Transportation Department (Secretaria de Movilidad or Semov) to implement regular speed traps to keep lead-footed motorists in check.

The roadway has been improved with a smooth asphalt coat, freshly painted lane markings and the installation of dozens of cat-eye reflectors to aid in after-dark navigation.

But the majority of drivers traveling the route commonly ignore traffic signs indicating a maximum speed limit of 60 Km/h and several 40 Km/h danger zones where vehicles most often turn on and off the bypass. And many also ignore the continuous yellow line dividing opposite lanes that prohibits passing anywhere on the Libramiento’s entire length.

As yet it remains unclear when, or if, Semov might start operating radar or instant photo speed traps. Smart motorists will avoid trouble by keeping a close eye on the speedometer and a light foot on the gas pedal.
