Border wall not viable, US ambassador tells radio station

Although speaking carefully so as not to encroach into the presidential campaign debate, recently arrived U.S. Ambassador to Mexico Roberta Jacobson said the proposal by presumptive Republican Party nominee Donald Trump to build a border wall would “not help” in furthering relations between the two nations.

“It’s not a policy of the current government. We don’t believe it is viable,” Jacobson told Radio Formula this week.

Republican Party officials voted this week to include Trump’s plans to build a border wall in the draft of the GOP’s platform. According to U.S. sources, the platform, if approved, will support a wall that covers “the entirety of the Southern Border and must be sufficient to stop both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.”  The proposal will be voted on next week at the Republican Party convention in Cleveland.

In her interview, Jacobson admitted that a new president would have the authority to terminate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), as Trump has suggested if he fails to get a renegotiated deal.

The diplomat said it was highly likely that President Barack Obama would ratify NAFTA before he left office.
