Obituary - July, 30 2016

Nanette Phillips de Enciso

Nanette Phillips de Enciso died July 17 after a long battle with cancer.

Born April 23, 1949 in Casper, Wyoming, Phillips graduated from Longmont High School in 1967.   She took various legal and secretarial courses, becoming a legal secretary.

Wherever she lived, Phillips always became involved in her community, through local politics or lending a hand where needed.

In 1995, Phillips moved to lakeside, where she met Antonio Enciso, whom she married on June 14, 1996.   “I got to have my cake, and eat it too. Tony is the frosting,” she was fond of saying.

Phillips was proud of becoming a Mexican citizen, and loved travelling across the country, getting to know the people and culture. Her training as a legal secretary came in handy as she worked in a number of local real estate offices.

Phillips spent hundreds of hours painting out graffiti, picking up garbage, removing visual pollution and protesting auditory pollution. She never did anything halfway, and had an opinion about most things.  She always made sure people knew where she stood on issues, whether it was in conversation, by email, or letters to the editor of newspapers.

Phillips was a founding supporter of the Tarahumara Project, and helped with many animal groups. She was a dedicated volunteer for the Operación Amor clinics that provide free spay and neuter procedures to economically challenged Mexican families. She was also involved in organizing monthly get-togethers for expats residing in San Antonio Tlayacapan.

Phillips is survived by her daughter Denise Ann, granddaughter Dena Marie, many siblings and their spouses, numerous nieces and nephews, her husband Antonio Enciso and family, and many friends.

A celebration of Phillips’ life will be held Saturday, July 30, 5 p.m. at the San Antonio plaza. There will be music and nibbles. Everyone is welcome.
