Kids with cancer swim with dolphins

Children in the Puerto Vallarta area undergoing treatment for cancer enjoyed an unforgettable day of fun and adventure, swimming and cavorting with dolphins Saturday, June 18.

Twenty-one kids and ten parents participated in the event, sponsored jointly by American Legion Post 14 and Vallarta Adventures.

It took a substantial coordinated effort to make this day out happen, involving 14 volunteers from Dolphin Adventure, and six additional helpers to man three trucks.

World-class Dolphin Adventure provides face-to-face encounters in which families can touch, feed, play and swim with dolphins.

It gave these kids much-needed smiles and laughter – a relief from the hardships of their condition and the rigors of their cancer treatment.

The treatment requires five-hour bus trip to Guadalajara for chemotherapy, followed by the return ride, accompanied by the exhaustion that goes with the therapy.

Puerto Vallarta’s cancer screening and treatment center, Canica Centro de Apoyo a Niños con Cancer, operates five days a week, with monthly meetings of children and parents.
