Huichol inspired luxury hotel opens in Punta Mita

The new W Punta De Mita Hotel is not only inspired by the local bohemian surf culture but the traditional patterns of the Wixarika (Huichol) people of Jalisco and Nayarit.

A A bright blue and green mosaic “Camino Huichol” walkway, stretching over 450 feet, acts as “the central nervous system of the space, with restaurants and shops branching off,” a hotel brochure says.

It continues: “Comprised of more than three quarters of a million individual tiles, the colors and scenes depicted within the design are inspired by the indigenous Huichol people of Mexico. The pathway is also a representation of the Huichol life journey, highlighting the ups and downs of life, with the goal to achieve spiritual ascension (as you may over the ocean at the end of the path).”

The property also features an oversized nine-foot Huichol statue standing in a reflection pool in the lobby, and a jungle scene with a jaguar adorned in Huichol beads – an animal said to be the guardian of the indigenous culture – on the side of the beachfront villas.

The hotel offers 119 guest villas, each with a private terrace, and five dining spaces, including Mesa1, which presents a seven-course customizable tasting menu. There is a spa, fitness center, surf shop and three meeting and event spaces.

The lowest prices on hotels.com this week were going for  $US300 per night. See wpuntademita.com for more details.
