Marijuana law proposal revised

Following a recent public poll, legislation to permit the medical use of marijuana in Jalisco will proceed but the move to relax laws on recreational use will be dropped.

Almost 14,000 citizens voted in the recent poll: 60.7 percent in favor of the therapeutic use of marijuana, and almost the same number opposed to increasing the permitted amount for personal use from five to 30 grams.

The “Ley Mariguana” proposed by Jalisco lawmaker Enrique Velasquez is currently under discussion in the Health Committee of the State Congress.

Other alterations to the bill include expanding the scope of the proposed Instituto para la Atencion Integral de las Adicciones to investigate the effects and properties of cannabis, as well as attending to addicts.
