6 politicians slain in Jalisco this year

The December 11 murder of Efren Alvarez Lopez, 50, the former mayor of San Sebastian del Oeste, joins a list of six deadly attacks on aspiring, active or former political figures that have taken place in the state of Jalisco in the second half of 2014.

The former mayor was killed by three men who shot him repeatedly at a veterinary hospital in Tlajomulco.

Lopez, who served as mayor for the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) between 2007 and 2009, had already survived an attempt to kidnap him in early 2012. On that occasion, a group of armed men arrived at his house but he escaped with his family.

In the first week of December, National Action Party (PAN) politician Agustin Jaime Velazquez was shot dead, also in Tlajomulco. Four other political figures were murdered between August and November. All of the attacks were apparently carried out by organized crime groups.
