Local groups plan march to influence UN climate change confab in Paris

On the eve of the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP21, set for Paris in early December, Guadalajara civic organizations are calling for a demonstration Sunday, November 29, to build awareness about climate change and its relation to the recent violence in Paris.

“Climate change fans the flames of conflict in many parts of the world,” said Nicolas Haeringer, a Paris-based activist affiliated with 350.org, the global group that is organizing the demonstrations, which seek to influence world leaders at COP21 to move away from fossil fuels.

Claudia Grossi, community relations liaison at the American School in Guadalajara, which boasts a comprehensive ecology protection effort, is inviting locals to the demonstration, based on the call from 350.org. “Many civic organizations in town are participating. The march will start in the Estación Tren Ligero Plaza Universidad and proceed towards the Minerva, starting at 10 a.m.”

COP21 begins November 30 and continues through December 11. It is the 21st yearly conference after a 1992 U.N. climate change meeting and its stated goal is “to achieve, for the first time in over 20 years of UN negoti

ations, a binding and universal agreement on climate, from all the nations of the world.”

Although the November demonstrations are conceived as peaceful, the U.S. Department of State cautions U.S. citizens in Mexico against participating in demonstrations, noting “the Mexican Constitution prohibits political activities by foreigners.”
