Breastfeeding discrimination sanctions on the table

Jalisco state legislators are considering a proposal to introduce sanctions against anyone who discriminates against mothers who breastfeed their babies in public.

Augusto Valencia of the Citizen’s Movement is seeking the change the state Criminal Code (Codigo Penal) to impose fines up to a maximum of 100 days’ minimum salary (7,300 pesos), as well as community service.

The move follows a recent protest by around 100 moms at a leading commercial mall that was accused of ejecting a mother who was breastfeeding her infant.
