Nonagenarian swims across Nayarit lake

A 90-year-old woman who only learned how to swim 20 years ago has won a competition in which she had to traverse the entire width of the Laguna Santa Maria del Lago in Nayarit.

Julieta del Carmen Gutiérrez, who admits to having had a fear of swimming pools as a teenager, took two and a half hours to make the three-kilometer crossing.

A native of Guadalajara’s Analco neighborhood, Gutiérrez took up swimming on her doctor’s advice after she developed a problem with her spine.

Despite experiencing physical problems throughout her life, Gutiérrez always kept fit and at the age of 65 came second in a “push ups” challenge for people aged 30 and over. In total, she did 2,032 push ups and only stopped after her daughter’s pleas.
