Jalisco joins HeforShe gender equality initiative

The Jalisco state government this week signed up to the United Nations’ HeforShe initiative to promote gender equality around the world.

The goal of HeforShe is to engage men and boys as agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights, by encouraging them to take action against negative inequalities faced by women and girls.

During the presentation of the initiative, state government officials, along with representatives of the Universidad de Guadalajara and the private sector, pledged to promote a series of measures designed to advance equal opportunity and empower women.

Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval highlighted steps already taken by his administration, including setting up a ‘Gender Alert’ system aimed at reducing gender-based violence, centers dedicated to the development of women and financial backing for entrepreneurial projects initiated by women.  He also promised to launch a campaign to “eliminate gender stereotypes” and “demasculinize” traditional male-dominated careers, and establish a “social innovation center” within the Instituto Jalisciense de las Mujeres.

The HeForShe website, heforshe.org, counts the number of men and boys around the world who have taken the HeForShe pledge. British actress Emma Watson serves as the public face of the HeforShe movement.
